ROAD BOARDS.
BICCARTON. The ordinary meeting [of this Board was held on Saturday at the office, Cashel street west. All the members present. Mr H. J. Hall in the chair. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The chairman reported that, in accordance with resolution passed at last meeting, he had, with Mr Stanley, waited on Mr L. Harper (stent for Mrs Russell) and arranged for the purchase of the piece of land selected by the Board on the Ilam road, as a site for a Road Board office. The Board unanimously approved of the terms made with Mr Harper. The surveyor submitted plans of an office and cottage for the Board, which were examined and approved after some slight alterations had been made. A letter was received from the chairman of the Ashley Road Board, enclosing the following resolutions passed by that Board : —" That this Board earnestly deprecates undue haste in the formation of shire* within the provincial districts of New Zealand, and is of opinion that the instance for amalgamation should proceed from the Road Boards interestei." "That, in the opinion of this Board, the colony of New Zsaland will be best served by the creation of a Provincial Board of Works within each provincial in lieu of the proposed division of the districts into Shires." The Board having considered the above resolutions, the clerk was directed to reply that the Riccarton Road Board cannot agree with them. Tne chairman was requested to communicate with the Hon C. C. Bowen in reference to the proposed changes in the boundary of the road districts. Mr J. Claridge waited on the Board and asked to be allowed to substitute river bed gravel in lieu of that from his own pit. The Board declined to grant the request. Mr Hoft waited on the Board and asked on what conditions they would form and metal the road through part of rural section No 145, about twelve chains. The Board agreed to foim and metal the road on the following conditions, viz, that it be dedicated to the Superintendent, and the sum of £l2 paid to the Board as a grant in aid of the work. A letter was received from the Avon Road Board, in reply, agreeing to pay one hale the cost of 178 yards of metal for the boundary toad, AletterwasreceivedfromMr
' Ruddenklau, asking permission to lay a railway siding across the station road, alsostatingthat it would be necessary to gravel the said road before winter. The surveyor was directed to reply that the Board had no objection to the crossing provided the guard rails were extended to the full width and the approaches properly ballasted up; also, that the gravelling of the road would be attended to when necessary. The surveyor was directed to inspect the culvert at Graham's Swamp, and lower it if necessary. The clerk was directed to write to the Avon Road Board, and ask what they proposed to do for the maintenance of the Millrace road, it being a boundary road, and in bad order. The surveyor's report was read and approved, and after passing accounts, the Board adjourned until Saturday, the 18th instant, at 11 o'clock.
