ROAD BOARDS.
HBATHOOTB. This Board met on Thursday, the 2nd instant, all the members being present. Correspondence was read from Mr W. T. Berry, requesting to be allowed to erect a ▼erandah in front of his new shop on the Ferry road ; granted, subject to the usual conditions. From Messrs D. Moody and D, Dickenson, re removal of fence on the Heathcote River road ; to be acknowledged, and requested to remove same at their own expense. From Mr E. Morgan, re formation of Barbor street, stating he could not collect balance of subscription due towards the formation of this street until the same was more satisfactorily completed. To be attended to. From Mr Whitelaw, in reference to having lent the Board wheelbarrows. To be acknowledged. From the City Council, re shingling portion of East town belt footpath. Approved of. From Thomas Wilson and others re clearing out creek from St John’s road to the river. Agreed to, on conditions that half cost of same is subscribed and paid to the Board. From the Secretary of Public Works, informing the Board that it was the intention of the Government to make alterations and extensions to the girder bridge in the Heathcote Valley and to the crossing at the railway gates on Colombo road. To be acknowledged. From Mr 0. Peagrim, asking to have about four chains of Smith’s lane shingled. To be attended to in due course, From Mr J. A. Cunningham, forwarding resolutions passed by the Ashley Road Board in reference to the formation of shires, &c, and asking the other Boards to join in adopting.' To be acknowledged. Mr Malcolm waited on the Board re obstructions to roads on the Sandhills. The foreman was instructed to visit same and report at the next meeting. Resolved—“ That Mr P, Kerr wait upon the Avon Road Board re approaches to the New Brighton bridge, and to make arrangements as to the allocation of balance of funds ; that Messrs Langdown and Manning be appointed a finance committee ; that the clerk receive an increase of salary of £1 per week from the Ist February last; that the foul state of the River Heathcote be brought under the notice of the Drainage Board; that the present plan of keeping Colombo road in repair be continued, but that each Road Board pay the whole cost of its culverts on each side of the load; that the Board solicitor be seen in reference to special rates. ” Re business in reference to Garland's road, Phillip’s Town, and Waltham, was deferred to the next meeting. Rates collected, £4O 13s ; from Spreydon Road Board, £5 7s 9d. Total, £46 Os 9d. Accounts passed for pay ment, £llß 17s. The Board then adjourned. ARAROA AND WAINUI. A meeting of this Board fras held at the Road Board office, Akaroa, on Saturday, 26th inst, Messrs Roberts, Bell and Keean being the members present. A letter was received from E. Harrington, requesting that the line of road be constructed to form communication from the German Bay Valley road to bis property on the hill side. It was resolved that the Board cannot enter into any further undertakings for the construction of by-roads until it is ascertained what amount will be allotted by the Government for expenditure in the district during the current year. A circular letter was received from chairman of the Ashley Road Board, handing resolutions of that Board deprecating undue haste in the formation of shires to supersede the present Road Board districts, and suggesting that the creation of a Provincial Board of Works would probably better secure the management of local affairs to the different districts. It was resolved that the Board coincide with the opinion that the formation of shires should not be proceeded with without due deliberation as to its effect in securing the local management of expenditure and works to the different localities. The clerk was instructed to write to the Secretary for Public Works relative to proceeding with the construction of the Onuku road, and also to write to the district engineer calling his attention to the desirability of completing the Wainui road diversion, French Farm Bay, now that the Government havearranged with Mr Dickens as to the amount of compensation. The meeting then adjourned.
