A hole was burned in the side of the house, and the internal part of the room where the fire was first discovered was also greatly injured. It is supposed to have originated from a defective chimney.

Immigration.—The Government has, we (Post) are glad to learn, recognised the necessity of the step which we advocated of stopping all further foreign emigration to this colony. Peremptory instruction to that effect were forwarded to the Agent-General, by telegraph, on the 17th of January last, and consequently we may expect that the only further shipments of foreign immigrants which we shall receive will be those whose passages had been arranged before the receipt by the Agent-General of the instructions referred to. The Chabge of Fobgeby against Campbell.—The Daily Times of the 29th says:—" After several tedious remands, the charge of forgery against George Hyde Campbell has fallen through. Prisoner surrendered to his bail at the Police Court yesterday, and from what had dropped from the Bench on the previous occasion, it was understood that unless some definite information was forthcoming respecting the informant and his witnesses, no further remand would be granted. Inspector Mallard owned that he was in possession of nothing further, but, acting on instructions, applied for another week's remand, which, under the Foreigner Offenders Act, he submitted he had a perfect right to do, and the Commissioner would then set the telegraph in motion. Mr Pyke refused any further remand, and discharged accused. Referring to the account of prisoner's capture by detective Farrell published in the New Zealand Times, and reprinted in several Victorian journals, his Worship stigmatised the arrest as one of the greatest blunders that ever came under his notice.

Appointments.—The Church News says : —The Diocesan Nominators and the Nominators for the united parishes of Prebbleton-with-Templeton and Halswell met on the 12th February, and nominated the Rev De Berdt Hovel], late assistant curate of St Michael's, Christchurch, to the Bishop for institution to the incumbency of the united parishes. Mr Hovell is at present absent from the diocese, but it is understood, we believe, that is willing to accept the nomination. Messrs Scott and W. J. Cranmer Dobie, candidates for holy orders, arrived from England in the Otaki early last month, and will in all probability be ordained to the diaconate on Sunday, the 12th inst. Both gentlemen are sons of English clergymen. Mr Scott has been studying divinity at the college established by the Rev Dr Collis at Stratford-on-Avon, and Mr Dobie has graduated at Exeter College, Oxford, where he took honours in the divinity school recently instituted. Mr Scott will be licensed to the assistant curacy of St Luke's, Cbristchurcb, for which he came out; it is not decided yet where Mr Dobie will be stationed.
