Festival Sebvicb. —A festival sen ice by the Diocesan Choral Association will take place this evening at St Luke’s. H.A.0.8. Society, —The quarterly summoned meeting will take place on Thursday, at 7.30 p.m. Building Society, No, 3.— The annual general meeting of the No. 3 Building Society will take place at the Oddfellows’ Hall this evening.

Bushranging in Australia.— On Friday next the Rev P. P. Agnew will deliver a lecture in the Oddfellows’ Hall on his life and experience amongst the bushrangers of New South Wales,

Canterbury College.— A meeting of the Governors of the College will be held this afternoon at the Public Library at three p.m. for the appointment of Registrar and other business. Applicants for the office of Registrar must send in their applications by noon this day.

Immigrant Ships. —We (Otago Daily Times) understand that the Albion Shipping Company, acting upon instructions received from the Emigration Department of New Zealand, refuses to allow single men to take cabin passages in vessels sailing from the Clyde, which are conveying Government emigrants. Runaway Horse. —Yesterday afternoon a horse drawing a cart laden with timber, but without any person in charge, was olserved proceeding down High street into the Ferry mad, where the timber fell off, thence into Barbadoes street, where the animal was stopped without any damage being done.

Attempt to Upset the Oxford Train, —On Saturday night, as the train was approaching West Oxford station, the driver C Haworth) noticed several stones placed on the rails, and shut off steam, but the engine could not be stopped in time to save her from going over them. They were of such a size as just to clear the rail guard of the engine, so that the wheels came in contact with them, causing the engine to jump. The police are making inquiries into the matter, and it is to be hoped that the perpetrators will be discovered.

Oxford Races. — A meeting of the stewards of these races was held at Mullens’ Freemasons’ Hotel, Oxford, on Saturday night, when it was resolved that the date originally advertised should be adhered to, viz, March 17th, Entries bearing the post mark of March Ist being received for the Handicap Hurdle race and the Oxford Cup. It was resolved that the right of booths, sale of cards, &c, should be let by tender, of which notice would be given by advertisement. The hon sec reported that the course had been ploughed and rolled, and was now in first-class order.

Heathcotb Bowing Club.—A special general meeting of the members of the Heathcote Rowing Club was held last evening, at the Wharf Hotel, Woolston, at which there was a fair attendance ; Mr G, A. Clark presided. A letter was read from the president, Mr J. L. Coster, enclosing a cheque for ten guineas, to be competed for as a prize. It was resolved that the best thanks of the club be given to Mr Coster for his generous gift, and that the details of the competition be left to the committee to arrange. Messrs J. Knox, W. Sibbald, J. Rule, Rennie, and Day, were elected mem bers of the club. On the motion of the viceCommodore, Mr J. W. Davis, it was resolved to enter for all the coming events at the Heathcote regatta. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.

A cigar manufacturer has entered the political field in Dubuque as a candidate for alderman. He is said to have some very strong backers. A Chinese mandarin showed his wife how to light a fire with American kerosene, and her experience will be of considerable aid to her second husband.
