THE SHOP BEATS MOVEMENT.

{Fall Mall Budget.) A praiseworthy attempt is being made in some of the large towns in England, and also in America, to lessen the sufferings too often endured by women employed as shop assistants owing to the practice which prevails of requiring them to stand for many hours in the day attending to the wants of customers. According to medical evidence, serious injury to their health is frequently caused by this continuous standing, and consequently a << Shop Seats Movement ” has been commenced to bring under the notice of drapers and others that purchasers really have no objection whatever to, but on the contrary, would be pleased rather than otherwise at, seeing these young shopwomen seated when not actually engaged in serving. It is to be hoped that this movement will direct attention to the question of promoting the health and comfort of shopwomen generally. It is really painful to witness the thoughtlessness of some ladies who, in inclement weather, being themselves well wrapped up, summon to the doors of their carriages young women from the shops they honour with their patronage, and keep them standing in the cold, regardless of consequences. The seeds of consumption and other fatal illnesses are probably often sown in this manner, and much misery might be averted by the exercise of a very little consideration and common sense.
