ROAD BOARDS.
HEATHCOTE. This Board met on Thursday, the 17th instant. Present: Messrs W. Langdown (chairman pro. te?n.'), P. Kerr, S. Manning, and Bobert Clephane. The clerk's receipts were _Ordinary rates, £4O 10s 7d ; Waimakariri, £3 7s 8d ; total, £43 18s 3d, and that he rad issued twenty summonses for rates, amounting to £53 Us sd. Messrs E. Garland and G. Duncan waited on the Board in reference to Garland's road leading to the railway, and were informed that Mr Clephane and the foreman would inspect the road and report to the Board at the next meeting. Messrs Berry and Badcliff saw the Board, offering to find labor and two horses and carts to the Board's one horse and cart, for claying about 25 chains of Dyer's road if the Board would do it and then shingle it afterwards. Messrs Beresford and Oxford waited on the Board in reference to a petition praying to have the roads and footpaths in Phillipstown shingled and the drainage attended to. It was agreed that two of the members should wait on the Christchurch Drainage Board in reference to the drainage, and that the roads and footpaths would be attended to in due course. The following correspondence was read—From Dr Patrick, reporting another case of scarlet fever in Waltham. The clerk stated he had written to the chairman of the Central Board of Health in reference to these cases, but as yet had received no reply. From Mr James Burberry, informing the Board of dedication of streets in Waltham, when a resolution was moved and carried, that a fresh assessment of this district be made, in view to striking a special rate for the purpose of forming and shingling these streets before winter, and that notice to this effect be given ,as required by the Ordinance. From Mr S. L. Bell, asking for about 200 yards of stone, to be used by him for the purpose of drainage, and to be taken from that part of the Sumner road leading round by Morton's Hotel. Granted on certain conditions. A petition from three residents of Waltham, complaining of a nuisance existing caused by a Mr Corkic keeping pigs in a filthy state. The Board decided to take prompt action in such cases, and that these premises were to be watched. From Mr J. T. Harrap, re keeping in repair Colombo road, and suggesting that new stone culverts be put in in the place of the wooden ones now worn out. Agreed that the foreman see Mr Harrap, and report on the matter next meeting. Another letter from the Secretary of Public Works, in answer to one from the Board re bad state of culvert on the Hills road, the Government stating they see no reason to alter, their previous decision in declining to repair same. Subject deferred for further information. Mr John Davis offered to give earth to fill up a corner of the River Heathcote road. Declined for the present, and certain owners living there be requested to move back their fences. From the Provincial Auditor, requesting further information in reference to financial returns. The clerk to furnish same. From the City Council, declining to Bhingle a portion only instead of the whole of the footpath on the East Town belt. To be written to again requesting leave to be allowed to do it at the Board's own cost. From the Commissioner of Police re bathing in River Heathcote. From Messrs Adley and seven others re clearing of the River Heathcote. To be informed the same is under the consideration of the Board. From the Registrar - General, furnishing information asked for by the BoaTd in reference to amount of grant likely to be received from the General Government for the year 1876, stating that, according to the Abolition of Provinces Act, 1875, the Board is entitled to £ for £ for every £ in rates raised, but that the Act however does not come into operation until the day after the last .day of, the next session of the General Assembly, and even then it might be repealed, therefore it would not be prudent for the Board to enter into engagements on the Strength of the payment until after the next session. Letter from the town clerk re Board of Health. The clerk to attend to the matter referred to. The Board then adjourned,
