(Per Press Agency.') Auckland, February 18. The police boats have been despatched to Rangitoto Island to-day, in consequence of a report that the Maori murderer was seen there. Not much faith is placed in the statement.
In reply to a request from Mr Rowe, M.H.R., for a further graut of money to employ the Thames miners, Sir J, Vogel telegraphs—* 1 We have already enabled | £50,000 to be spent to try the Thames gold fields. No Government in any other of the colbnies has done so much. II would be ridiculous to spend money for the mere purnose of keeping men at the Thames if labor * not required. Plenty of labor is required la other parts of the colony, and, if necessary, the Government would aid the unemployed to go to parts where employment offers. Dr Pollen has left for Auckland.

The enquiry into the late fire showed that a suspicious looking man had been lurking about at the time of the outbreak, and the jury returned a verdict that there was strong reason to suspect incendiarism. Louis Barrett, secretary of the Colonial Building Society, has been arrested on the charge of embezzling five pounds, the property of the society.
