COMMERCIAL.
The grain market is again presenting some animation, a few farmers having come into town during the week to dispose of their produce, and several sales have been made. The majority are however still busy stacking and threshing, and it will still be a few weeks before trade is in full swing. So far the quality turned out is first class, and in most instances the yields have come fully up to expectation. Some fair sized parcels of wheat have been - offered and taken up at from 3s 8d to 3s 9d for threshed lots, the latter price being paid for very prime samples for immediate grinding, but exporters are unwilling to give over the former figure in the face of comparatively low prices now ruling in the home market. Considerable quantities of oats have changed hands dming the week at Is 7d, but we hear some farmers, rather than accept this price, are storing instead. There is however little inquiry from outside markets, sufficiently large stocks being still held throughout the colony to last for some time without importing from this province. Barley is dull ot sale at 3s 6d for prime malting ; medium quality is extremely difficult to move, and sales have been made at 3s, whilst for inferior lots 2s has. been taken. Millers’ quotations are unaltered, and prices remain nominally at £lO, in sacks; but ex ports of flour are very limited. Bran and sharps are not much enquired for, and prices are nominally £3 5s and £3 15s respectively. Dairy produce continues in good demand, and It is difficult to execute orders in full, but supplies will probably come in more freely when farmers get through with their crops. For prime butter we quote 9id to lOd, and for cheese B|d to BJd. Haras and bacon are in better demand since reduction in prices, which now stand at lOd. Transactions in the import markets have been very few this week: and we have little beyond trade sales to report, owing In a great measure to the farmers being so busy harvesting. Stocks in some lines are accumulating rapidly, and will with difficulty be worked oil without loss to parties interested. The Kangitikei arrived from London on the 16th inst, after a splendid run. In sugars we have to report only moderate trade sales, at full rates; the market is fairly stocked with all qualities except grocers’ yellow crystals. We understand a part cargo of Mauritius sugars is on the way from Dunedin, and may be looked for shortly. Teas have met with fair trade sale, at our last rates, Hennessy’s brandy has been quitted freely, at ss i b • Martell’s dark has met with good sale, at 8s 3d i’b. English Hops—A large parcel now in port has been offered at 2s; tbe demand for this line Is good, Cement—Several sales have taken place during the week; prices remain firm at 20s 3d for large lines. Galvanised iron is exceedingly dull and difficult to place at low rates; stocks are getting very heavy. Bottled Ales and Stouts—Several small parcels have been quitted at lls to 11 s 6d for qts; and 7s 3d to 7s 9d for pts. Cornsacks have been freely dealt In; large lines are quitted at 10s 6d for ordinary sacks, while Calcutta made sacks are In good request at lls; sales have been made to large farmers at lls to lls 6d. A line of Fry’s cocoa has been quitted at Is 4d; chocolate is dull of sale, and realises is 3jd. Messrs H. Matson and Co report on the live stock market, &c. for the week ending Friday, February 18th, 1876, as follows:—At Addington, on Wednesday, only a limited quantity of stock came to hand. Our sales were, for various owners, fat cattle at equal to 27s 6d to 30s per lOOlbs; for prime beef 248 to 26s per lOOlbs; for ordinary young stock at fully a reduction of 10 per cent on last rates; milch cows at £7 10s to £ll 5s per head, In sheep, we sold for the Rev A. P. O’Callaguan, fat, at 10s- H. F. Gray, Ksq, tolosGd;for W. Prebbleto lls 9d.’and sundry lines at an average of IJdto 2d per lb. Skins, hides, and tallow a fair supply to hand. Country sales—On account of the executors ot the late F. Lane, we held a sale of live and dead stock, interest in leasehold site, when there was a very large attendance of purchaser, and spiritep competition throughout the sale. The interest in lease, 100 acres, twelve years to run, averaged 12s 6d per acre, bringing £550 ; fourteen dairy cows, inferlor, £9 per head; horses, £27 to £3O; and miscellaneous articles at very full rates. At Mr R. Wilkin’s weekly skjn and tallow auction, Mr Aikman reports a decline in the price of both sheepskins and tallow, the latter has receded quite equal to the fall in tbe home markets. Full woolled sheepskins, 3s to 5s 6d each : pelts, fid to 23id each) lambskins, Is 7d to 2s 3d each ; - ron-rb fat, l|d to ?d per lb ( do, very inferior, Id
