They left at noon to-day to commence to morrow landing shore end, and weather permitting, will proceed seaward to connect with deep sea end. Whether they return here or Wellington is uncertain. Nelson, Feb 18. The landing of the cable was successfully completed yesterday evening. The Duke of Edinburgh anchored half a mile from the landing place in six fathoms of water, with the water gradually shallowing. A rope was taken from her stern, and fastened to a large tree which had drifted on to the beach. A boat with the cable end then started hauling itself shorewards by the rope, and another boat followed to assist in bearing the weight of the cable; then another, then another, and so on, till ten boats heating the cable intervened between the ship and the shore. A gang of men then laid hold of and dragged the cable to the testhouse fifty yards from the beach,

A number of excursionists from Nelson were present, who loudly cheered the completion of the work. Just as the whole thing was finished the Tui with Dr Lemon and Mr Shapley on board entered the inlet. The steamers were to start at twelve last night, and are expected to effect the junction by two this aftei’uoon. The land line between the landing place and Nelson was completed yesterday. The steamers will return to Nelson to-night, and wait till Tuesday, and then proceed to Wellington.
