Melbourne, Thursday, Dec. 23,

The departure of the City of Melbourne on Monday, and the Hero from Sydney yesterday, has left only one day’s news. The Assembly on Thursday night passed that portion of the Land Bill for raising the assessment on stock, leaving the other portions to be dealt with at some future time. The Bill has reached the Council, but they have postponed dealing with the second reading until to-day. The weather has been very hot, the thermometer ranging as high as 106 in the shade in some parts of the country. Two children, boy and girl, were drowned in a dam at the Shecpwash near Sandhurst. They were fishing for crayfish, and fell in. Two boys were drowned whilst bathing at Warrnambool.

Several cases of drowning occurred also whilst bathing during the hot weather. The Assembly has passed Mr Tod’s Bill for continuing the collection of tolls for six months’ longer. It has also passed a Bill for permitting women to graduate at the University, A fire in East Collingwood this morning destroyed five wooden houses uninsured. The Chief Secretary, Mr Macpherson, has left for Tasmania.

Sydney, Parliament has decided to adjourn to the 11th of January. By a telegram of the sth, Government received advices of the arrival of Mr Forster at home. He has commenced his duties.

The City East election resulted in the return of Mr Bees by a majority of 34. The numbers were : Bees, 300 ; Clark, 266. The Eden nominations took place to-day. At the nomination fifteen candidates were proposed, including Sir George Grey and Sir Julius Vogel. A ruse was adopted which deprived the intended proposer and seconder of Sir George Grey from speaking. Carpenter was then proposed, merely to speak in favour of Sir George Grey, who was not present. Mr Carpenter and Mr Brodie have retired. Mr Mackay’s speech was an attack upon Sir George Grey. Mr Mackay will not contest the seat. The proceedings occupied over three hours. Sir George Grey arrived by yesterday’s steamer, and held a meeting last night, which was largely attended. Napier, December 30, The Napier election has made more excitement than at previous elections. Results of the poll at Napier;—McLean, 213; Russell, 147; Colenso, 33; Stuart, 151 ; Ferrard, 13. The total with town and country polls give McLean, 330 ; Russell, 269 ; Stuart, 173 ; Colonso, 38 ; Ferrard, 13. Messrs McLean and Russell were elected. Wellington, December 30. Three of the men so murderously assaulted at the Hutt still linger on, but Leedlc and Paul cannot survive much longer. Their brains arc oozing out, and their feet arc cold and getting black. Young, who was cut in the neck, stands some slight chance of recovery. The cable between Penang and Madras is still interrupted. The route via Siberia is open ; minimum charge to London is £l3 10s 6d for twenty words. Steamers continue to run between Penang and India and Singapore and India by which means all messages arc forwarded.

The Omeo left Melbourne at 2.15 p.m, on the 23rd, and arrived off Bluff at 5.30 p.m. of the 30th, and came up the harbour at 5 a.m. of the 31st. She experienced strong S.E. winds and thick weather throughout the passage. She brings 100 tons of cargo, 42 horses, 255 rams, and 2 bulls for all ports. She sails for Dunedin at 4 p.m. to-day.
