SOUTH RAKAIA ANNUAL SPORTS.

Starters for the horse race—Messrs Robinson and Peat Judge—Mr D. Middleton. Starter for foot races—Mr Cox. Judges— Messrs Bruce and Patton. Judge for jumping—Mr Kemble. Committee— Messrs Peat, Patton, Middleton, B. b'. Coster, Neil McLean, M. Fagin, Kemble, and Bruce. Secretary—Mr Poyntz. Treasurer—Mr Robinson. The first of what is hoped will prove annual sports took place at the above place on Monday, December 27th, and proved a great success, thanks to the efforts of the energetic secretary, Mr Poyntz, ably assisted by the treasurer, Mr Robinson, and the other members of the committee. There was a very large attendance throughout the day of spectators, and the fair sex showed up in great numbers, it being computed that there were over two hundred persons on the ground, the presence of one gentleman in full Highland costume being particularly noticeable. As will be seen by the subjoined list, the prizes were liberal and well contested. In fact, so keenly were the events contested that a private match for one hundred yards for £3, between two well known amateurs, was the subject of much speculation, and a great deal of money changed hands over it. The secretary and treasurer were to be seen at all points of the ground, putting up hurdles, encouraging the competitors, and in fact making themselves generally useful. The constabulary were represented by Constable Cartmill, whose iuties were exceedingly light. Nothing whatever occurred to mar the general harmony.
