SPORTING.

GRBYMOUTH RACES. (From a correspondent of the Press.) Greymouth, December 28, The stewards were favored with fine weather for the second day’s racing, and consequently the attendance was exceedingly good. The going, in spite of the heavy rain the previous day, was pretty good, and the sport, in spite of two walk overs, very fair. I append a detailed account of the variows events: — All-comers Handicap (held over from preceding day), of 30 so vs; one and a half miles. Mr Lunn’s gr m Alice Grey, by the Grape, out of Banshee, 6 yrs, walked over. Grey Valley Stakes, of 125 soys ; second horse 25 sovs ; one mile and three quarters. Mr Campbell’s b g Tommy Dodd, by Bay Middleton, 6st 121 b (Rowland) 1 Mr Cochran’s ch g Sandy, aged, 6st 101 b (Cochran) 2 Mr Lunn’s br m Nectar, 5 yrs, Bst 61b (inducting2lb overweight).. (McEwen) 3 The lot got well away at the second attempt, Sandy at once going to the front and cutting out the work, Tommy Dodd next, and the mare last. They ran thus for rather over a mile, when Tommy Dodd drew up, and Nectar seemed to be quite out of it. The two leaders ran together to the turn, when the veteran hurdle racer drew away and won comfortably by about three-quarters of a length, Sandy second ; Nectar, who was not persevered with, last. No time was taken in this or in any of the other events during the meeting, and there was very little speculation. Borough Handicap of 50 sovs; two miles. Mr Hungerford’s b g Nero, aged, 6st 51b (Dernutb) 1 Mr Ray’s b c Tadmor, 4 yrs, 9st (Jones) 2 Mr Cameron’s gr g Septimus, aged, fist 41b (Hope) 3

The Novel race produced four local celebrities, one being Little Rover, well known in Canterbury. The race was won pretty easily by old Dick Turpin, who was sold after the race for £25.

The Hurdle race was a walk over for Alice Grey. For the Consolation two started, The Bat and Septimus, each carrying list, and resulted in a dead heat. In the run off The Bat was the favorite, but he ran inside a post, leaving Septimus to win the last event of a very fair meeting.
