[Per City of Melbourne, via Auckland.] London, December 16. A tremendous explosion took place at a wharf at the mouth of the Weser, by which seventy people were killed and 100 wounded. The perpetrator has confessed that it was a plot to sink the steamer Moselle for the sake of getting the insurance. December 17. The Northern Powers have agreed to certain reforms in Turkey, but in the meantime the Sultan has taken the initiative, and proclaimed the legal equality of his subjects. Parliament will re-assemble on the Bth of February. December 18. The Australian mail via San Francisco was delivered on the 13th December. The mail via Brindisi has also arrived. COMMERCIAL. London, December 18. The wool sales closed firm, but without an advance. 104,840 bales were catalogued, 3000 of which were taken for exportation. The imports are 50,000 bales in excess of last year. The next series of sales will commence on the 16th February,

A telegram this evening from Adelaide announces the arrival of the steamer of Edinburgh with the shore end of the New Zealand cable. The body of a man was found in Paramatta river on Saturday. A post mortem disclosed that he was strangled before getting into the water. The Hero sails on Wednesday. Melbourne, Saturday. Richard Lee, charged with publishing an obscene publication, was acquitted. At the inquest on the body of John Mankovitch, who committed suicide, the jury returned a verdict that deceased shot himself while in his proper senses. In the champion sculling match on the Lower Yarra to-day, between Christie and Cazally, the former won. Both boats kept together till near the winning-post, when Christie drew ahead, winning by a halflength. After passing the winning-post Christie's sliding seat broke and his boat upset, but the occupant got to land safely. A man committed suicide yesterday bj blowing out his brains. The man Mankovitch left a letter showing that jealousy of the conduct of his wife caused him to commit suicide. It was the anniversary of his wedding day, and he determined to scatter his brains over his wife's body, that she might remember it. Mr Longmore, at a meeting last night, said that twenty-one members of the Opposition were pledged to a " stonewall " policy. There will be one or two changes in the Victorian cricketing eleven yet before the matter is finally settled. Newcastle, Friday.

Last evening Mrs Parker, of Lambtan, mother of three well-known and respected residents, was nearly burned to death in her own home. She still lingers, but is almost unconscious. As she is sixty-five years of age, very little hopes are entertained for her recovery. She was alone when her dress caught fire. A man drawing water at the time threw some over her as she ran out of the house, which checked the flames. Two Chinamen, named Ah Chong and Foo Hung, were drowned opposite Mrs Williamson's, Belmont Lake Mcquarries, through the upsetting of a boat, during a heavy squall yesterday.

INTERPROVINCIAL.

Auckland, December 26.

Arrived—City of Melbourne, from Sydney. Captain Brown reports leaving on the 20th. When the Sydney Government found that Mr Hall was unable to comply with the terms of the contract, they chartered the City themselves to take the month's mails to San Francisco. They sent her via Auckland because they understood that the New Zealand Government had refused to send the mails by the Cyphrenes. She awaits instructions from Wellington as to whether to call at Kandavau or go straight on to San Francisco. She passed the Colima in the passage across. Auckland, Dec 27.

The City of Melbourne proceeded on her voyage to San Francisco at noon to-day. All the sports are postponed on account of the heavy rain. lima de Murska is expected to-morrow per Hero. Mr Olai ke, a candidate for the City East, publishes a letter in this day's Herald, in which he says he is prepared to support and follow Sir G. Grey in everything except separation. The office of the Sydney Evening News, had a narrow escape of being totally destroyed by fire. Notwithstanding the efforts of the fire brigade the damage to the premises, printing material, and paper in stock was about £6OOO. Nearly all the material in the compositors' room was destroyed, and a quantity of paper. The stock and premises were insured for £9OOO, of which £2500 was in the New Zealand office. No other local offices were interested.

A deputation from the central committee, consisting of Messrs Shera, Swanson, and others, left for Kawau this morning to ask SirG. Grey to stand for the Thames. It is expected he will consent. Gkahamstown, Dec 27. C. A. Comes, a miner, is a candidate for the Thames.

The friendly societies demonstration, in aid of the hospital funds is postponed till Saturday. Wellington, Dec 27.

This morning a German at McKirdy's camp, Upper Hutt, was accused of theft by one of his mates, upon which he struck bis accuser down with an axe, and served three other men in the same manner. He then made for the bush, and has not yet been captured. One only of the four escaped with slight wounds, the other three were brought into hospital this morning, but two are not expected to live many hours. Nelson, December 27.

The regatta to-day passed off most successfully. There was a large number of visitors and several boats from Wellington. In the three whaleboat races the Nelson crews beat the Wellington men. The Hawea and Ladybird, which brought 500 excursionists, return to Wellington to-night. Dunedin, December 27. A fire in George street destroyed the premises of Jenkins, furniture dealer, Moylan, tailor ; Davis, butcher. Jenkins's stock was insured in the National for £3OO. He estimates his loss at £IOO. Moylan was insured in the New Zealand for £250 ; he estimates his loss at £SO. Both shops were owned by Harrop and Neill, and insured for £SO in the New Zealand office. The origin of the fire is unknown. Two suits of clothes were found on Toma hawk Beach on Saturday, which, it is believed, belonged to two lads who went out rabbit shooting and bathing. The bodies have not been found. The weather for the holiday to-day is wretched, Invercargill, Dec. 27. At the election the result of the poll was— Luixeden, 180; Cuthbertson, 159.
