ROAD BOARDS.
HEATHCOTE. This Board met on Thursday, the 23rd instant. Present: Messrs. J. T. Fisher (chairman), Dunlop, Mardon, and Attwood. The minutes were read and confirmed, when the clerk reported having collected, Waimakariri rate, £4l2s sd; ordinary road rate, £5819s lOd: total, £63 12s 3d. The following correspondence was read :—From Mr N. B. Cocks, re drainage, granting the Board permission to drain through his land, and complaining of the river being stopped up. To be informed that the planting of willows by persona living on the land adjoining the river is the principal cause of the stoppage, and that the owners will have notice to clear same. From Mr E. Garland and others, re clearing of drain leading from the the Hills road to Bailway drain. To be informed the Board will attend to same on receiving half cost from owners of property benefitted. From Mr D. McFarlane, re bad state of Worcester street east. To be informed the Board will attend to the same as soon as the road is dedicated for public use, and also that the Board did answer his last letter, and it was dated the 17th of July last. From Mr Charles Jones, declining to grant the Board permission to erect a water tank for the use of the public opposite the Hillsborough school. From Mrs A. Pavitt, complaining of stagnant water in ditches. To be informed the foreman will see to it. From the clerk, asking for an increase of salary. To be deferred until after the election of the new Board. Spreydon Boad Board —received letter with Bill for £4l 10s 7d, being half-cost of keeping Colombo road in repair for twelve months. To be informed this Board is of opinion it would be more satisfactory if for the future the repairs on this road were let by contract viz, repairs at so much metal at per yard, and must decline to continue the old system. Two letters from the Secretary of Public Works, being answers, one re the Yankee crossing on Garland's road ; and the other re culvert on Hill's road, informing the Board that the Government see no reason to alter their decision in either case. From the town clerk, re shingling town belt footpath. To be informed the Board objects to settle for the work before same is completed, and that the clerk get a copy of specifications for the work before tenders are called for. From the Provincial Auditor, stating he would be prepared to audit the accounts of the Board on the sth January. The clerk was instructed to have same ready. From the chairman of the Central Board of Health. To be acknowledged with thanks. Mr Gilbert waited on the Board asking permission to remove earth from the Hills road and Sumner road. Resolved that the Board cannot grant the request as it is wanted for filling up the holes, and that the foreman remove same at once. Tenders for shingling the lower Avon river road, and also for impounding cattle, were opened, and one for each accepted. Resolved it be recorded in the minute book that Messrs J. T. Fisher and William Attwood retire from the Board by rotation, and Messrs William Dunlop, William Mardon, and William Ness resign. Accounts to the amount of £264 12s 7d were passed for payment, when the Board adjourned to Thursday, the 6th of January, 1876.
