NEWS OF THE DAY.

A vox Nomination.—The nomination of candidates for the seat in the General Assembly for the Avon District took place at Fapanui this day, at noon. There was a very small attendance. Mr T. I. Joynt proposed his Honour the Superintendent in a very eulogistic speech, and Mr Lowe seconded the nomination. No other candidate being proposed, Mr G. L. Lee, the returning officer, declared his Honour duly elected. His Honour shortly addressed those present, and the proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to the returning officer,

I.YTTELTON BOROUGH PCHOOL. The annual distribution of prizes in connection with the Lyttelton Borough School will take place this evening at 6.30 p.m.

The Messiah.—The Harmonic Society will give the " Messiah" at the Oddfellows' Hall on Thursday next. Miss Rosina Carandini will take the principal soprano solos. The final rehearsal took place last evening.

Election Meetings The following election meetings will be held this evening— Mr J. B. Brown at Saltwater Creek, at eight; Mr Maskell at the Oxford Road Board office, at 7 30 ; Mr Jcbsou, at Greendale schoolroom at 7.30 ; Mr Fitzroy, at Killinchy, at 7.30.

Interprovincial Match.—We remind cricketers that a general meeting for the election of an match committee, and reception of report of last year's proceedings, will be held at Warner's Hotel at eight p.m. this evening.

Telegraphic.— The steamer Albion is expected to leave the Bluff at 11 a.m. on Thursday, the 23rd inst. Telegrams for the Australian Colonies, or Europe via Java cable, will be received at the Christchurch telegraph office, for transmission to Bluff up till 10 a.m. of the 23rd inst. Match for a Trophy.—A race for a trophy, valued £lO, was arranged last evening at the Garrick Hotel between J. F.Goughand M. Gibbens. The race, which is for a distance of 100 yards, will take place on Boxing Day on the Agricultural Show Grounds at the Tradesmen's Athletic Sports. Heathcote Election.—Mr Fisher on Monday evening addressed a meeting of the electors in the schoolroom, Lincoln. At the conclusion of Mr Fisher's address, it was resolved —" That this meeting has confidence in Mr Fisher so far as the present candidates who are in the field, but if a better man comes forward, this meeting does not pledge itself to support him."

The Selwyn Election.—Messrs Reeves and Fitzroy addressed the electors of the Selwyn district in the Town Hall, Southbridge, on Monday evening. The hall was crowded in every part. Captain Willis occupied the chair. Both candidates addressed the meeting at length, and at the close, votes of thanks both candidates were carried, and the meeting separated. Drapers' and Clothiers' Association. A general meeting of the above association was held last evening, in the Foresters' Hall, at 8 p.m., Mr F.Malcolm in the chair, to consider what steps should be taken with reference to the forthcoming holidays, bu* as the establishments were unanimous in keeping the usual day, no action was considered necessary. After some business of a routine character, the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair. The annual meeting of the association will be held early in January Heathcote Election. Sir Cracroft Wilson addressed the electors of Heathcote at the Woolston Oddfellows' Hall last evening, Mr W. Wilson in the chair. Sir Cracroft touched in his address on the various topics of the day, and at the conclusion of his speech Mr Gilbert moved—" That this meeting desires to express its thanks to Sir Cracroft Wilson for his address to the Heathcote electors on this occasion." Mr Tonkin seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the proceedings.

Accident. An accident of a rather serious character took place yesterday afternoon, at Mr Hayes', farmer, Tai Tapu. A youth eighteen years of age, named John "Alsett was at work, when he struck at a foal with a pitchfork he had in his hand, the prongs beiag towards him. The blow missed the foal, and the handle striking the ground, 'he pitchfork rebounded, and one of the jrongs entered Alsett's side It was pulled out by Mr Hayes, who conveyed the sufferer ho the hospital, where he was attended to. Tt is hoped that Alsett is not so severely injured as was at first feared. Prebbleton Sports —A meeting of the sports committee was held in the library, Prebbleton, on Monday evening, the 20th inst. It was proposed by Mr C. J. Wentwortb Cookson, seconded by Mr J. W. Anderson, that Mr Maskrey take the chair. The secretary then called upon those persons having lists to read out the amounts collected by them, the result of which, when added to the balance in hand from last ytar, showed a total of £62. The following resolutions were passed :—" That the sports be held in a paddock belonging to Mr Edward Prebble, who had kindly lent it for the occasion, on Monday, the 27th inst., at 11 a.m." Also, " That the services of Mr Button's band be engaged for the day." A vote of thanks to Mr Ed ward Prebble for his kindness in lending his paddock having been carried unanimously, the meeting adjourned until 10 a.m. on Mondaj, the 27th inst.

Central Board op Health.—A meeting of the Central Board of Health was held yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, at the Government Buildings. Present—His Honor the Superintendent (in the chair), Dr Turnbull, Mr Hart, and the Provincial Secretary. The City Council reported that there was reason to believe that cases of scarlet fever of a mild form had occurred on board the intercolonial steamers, and enclosing reports from the medical practitioners of Christchurch, which stated that some cases of scarlet fever of a mild type had also occur red in the city. It was resolve'!—-" That the Health Officer should inspect all the intercolonial steamers before permitting communication with Ihe shore, with the special object of preventing the introduction of scarlet fever." It was also decided to communicate with Health Officers of the several ports in New Zealand, informing them of the action of the Board, and requesting them from time to time to inform the Canterbury Board of any suspicious cases occurring in their respective districts. The Board then adjourned. Lyttelton Regatta Committee.—A meeting of this regatta was held on Monday evening at the Colonists' Hall. Mr Hawkins, the commodore, occupied the chair. Correspondence was read—From Mr Leathes, hon sec of the Nelson regatta committee, with reference to Lyttelton crews competing at Nelson, and also as to alteration of date at which the Nelson regatta should be held. From Mr C. E. Briggs, stating that the Timaru regatta committee complained that little publicity had been given to the Lyttelton programme at that place. From Mr C. W. Bridge, of Akaroa, asking if the Swallow would be allowed to compete in the Interprovincial Champion Whaleboat race. From Mr James Snoswell, of Lyttelton, also requesting information on the same subject. A long discussion ensued on this point, Mr J, 0. Boddington stating that he had sent an

account of the Hobart Town boats to Wellington, and that, after seeing the description, the Wellington crews had said they would not compete against such vessels; they would compete either in a whaleboat or gig race, but not against boats that were between the two. After further discussion, Mr Cunningham moved " That the attention of those interested be called to rule 16." Nobody seconded this proposition, and Mr Young then moved " That the Swallow be not allowed to compete in the Inter provincial four-oared champion whaleboat race." This was seconded by Mr George Agar. Mr T. A. W. Parsons moved as an amendment " That the Swallow be allowed to compete," seconded by Mr Home. After further discussion, the motion and amendment were withdrawn in favour of the following proposition from Mr Cunningham, "That, in answer to the communications from Messrs Snoswell and 0. Bridge, a copy of the rules be sent, drawing attention to iule 16, and that Messrs Bridge and Snoswell's communications be forwarded to the judges." This was seconded by Mr J. C. Boddington, and carried. Capt Mitchell, of the ship Langstone, showed the committee a handsome cup, which Messrs Shaw, Saville and Co had kindly sent out in his vessel to be competed for at the Lyttelton Begatta. The chairman spoke of the great kindness shown by Messrs Shaw, Saville and Co in annually forwarding a handsome cup to be competed for. He moved —" That a letter of thanks be written to Messrs Shaw, Saville and Co for their handsome present." Agreed to unanimously. The following sub-committees were then appointed—Engagement of "band, Mr P. Cunningham ; laying off courses, Messrs Bich, Agar, W. Cameron, and Captain M'Lellan ; battery and flags, JMr Home ; tubs and shovels, Mr Young: refreshment booths, Captain M'Lellan ; entries committee, hon sec, treasurer, Mr Cunnningham. Mr Cunningham proposed—" That tenders be called for a boat for the use of the committeeship." Agreed to. In reply to a question from the chairman, Captain M'Clatchie stated that the Gazelle was at the disposal of me committee on regatta day. Mr Boddington proposed that a sub-committee consisting of the commodore, secretary, treasurer, and Messrs Cunningham and Bich be appointed to complete arrangements for the regatta. Carried. The names of Captain Sproul, and Messrs Thornton and Garwood were added to the list of stewards. The committee then adjourned till 30th instant.
