* ( Per Press Agency.') Wellington, December 17. Dr Lemon has returned from White’s Bay, and reports a complete breakage of the cable about fourteen miles from here. It is in a bad place. The Luna takes Major Atkinson to Taranaki to-night. Taueanga, December 17. At the Rifle Match yesterday, between the men of H.M.S. Sappho and the Tauranga Rifles and Constabulary, the men of H.M.S. Sappho were beaten by one hundred and forty-two points. Timaru, December 17. A crowded public meeting was held last night, to urge forward the beginning of the Breakwater on Sir J. Goode’s plan. A very strong feeling against the Provincial authorities" delay in the matter was shown. It was resolved that, as no satisfactory answer could be obtained from the Superintendent, he be memorialised to apply to the Govemor-in-Council to commence the work. An influential committee was formed to circulate the memorial and raise money for keeping up the agitation. Another Breakwater meeting is to be held at Waimate to-night, and others are to follow elsewhere. The district is fairly aroused, and will not rest till the harbour works are put in hand. The regatta to-day was an unqualified success. Ten boats competed, and there was not a hitch all day. About three thousand people witnessed the racing, which was excellent. The flower show was also largely attended, and the exhibits were excellent. Dunedin, December 17. Nominations for the members for Dunedin city took place yesterday. The following are the names proposed and the show oi hands Stout, 149 ; Macandrew, 97 ; Macassey, 89 ; Armstrong, 76 ; Larnach, 30 ; Grant, 23 ; Reynolds, 16 ; Fish, 16. A poll was demanded by Mr Reynolds. It is stated that Mr Macassey will retiie in favour of Mr Larnach, and cont-st Caversham. Mr Reynolds, if unsuccessful in Dunedin, will try Boslyn. HUTT RACES. ITutt, December 17. Yesterday turned out beautifully fine, but there were comparatively few people on the course, which was heavy from last night’s rain. The Governor arrived about noon. Hutt Park Stakes 50 sovs; miles; eleven entries. Cocksure 1 Phoenix 2 P incess Mary 3 Voltaire also started. Guy Fawkes, Tattler, Cloth of Hold, Templeton, Lady Grey and Castilian were scratched. Before starting Princess Mary bolted, and went the distance before bein..' pulled up, but was ranged up for another start. The first quarter of a mile Voltaire threw his rider, who s emed to be about to rise oft the ground, when to all appearance one of the other horses trod upon him, and he was carried oft’ the course. Princess Mary cut out the running leaving Phcenix and Cocksure six or seveji lengths in the rear Haphazard was behind from the first and had no show. Upon nearing the straight Cocksure overhauled Princess easily, follow'd by Phcenix. Cocksure led at the straight by several lengths, and won by eight lengths, Phcenix second, Princess third. Dr Diver attended Voltaire’s rider, who it turned out had his thigh broken. Punga lying second, and Daniel third, Fishhook fourth, They kept in this order until about three-quarters of a mile from home, when Daniel cut down Punga and made a desperate effort to overhaul Korari, but though he was whipped all the way up the straight, Korari won as he liked hands down by seven lengths Punga was a bad third, and Fishhook a long way behind.
