MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, December 11. (Before G. L. Hellish, Esq, R.M.) Larceny. —Thomas Henry Cock, alias Cox, was brought up on a charge of stealing a pair of boots, the property of John Woodward. Detective Bettington deposed to the arrest of the prisoner yesterday; charged him with stealing a pair of boots. Prisoner at first said ho had not taken the boots, and subsequently, that he had bought them. Samuel Stewart, pawnbroker, stated that the boots produced had been pawned with him on Thursday last by prisoner. He gave prisoner eight shillings on them. Elizabeth Woodward stated that her husband kept a boot shop in High stieet. The boots produced were her husband’s property, and were made on the premises. Missed them from the shop between two and three o’clock on Thursday afternoon. Prisoner had no right to take them. The value of the boots was 225. Prisoner declared lie had not taken the boots, but admitted that he had pawned them for another man. Sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, w r ith hard labor.
