Christchurch Artillery. —The inspection of this corps is postponed until Tuesday, 14th instant. A notice to this effect will be found in our advertising columns. The Avon Election. —We understand that Mr T. I. Joynt has declined to come forward as a candidate for the Avon District in the General Assembly. Rose Show.—A rose show in connection with the Christchurch Horticultural Society will be held to-morrow in the Congregational schoolroom. Hereford Street Bridge. —Tenders for the erection of this bridge were opened yesterday by the City Council, and that of Mr James Tait, for £1277, was accepted. Volunteer Fire Police. —The special meeting of this corps, called for to-morrow, is postponed until Tuesday next, at the Lichfield street station, at half-past seven o’clock. Bakers’ Annual Picnic.— A meeting of master bakers will be held on Thursday evening, at half-past seven, at the British Crown Hotel, to make arrangements for the annual picnic. Licenses to Cabmen, —On the motion of Cr Ick it was resolved, at yesterday’s meeting, to request the Commissioner of Police to report on the character of every applicant for a license, before the licenses for next year are issued. Electoral. —His Honor the Superintendent will address the electors of Avon at the Church schoolroom, Papanui, this evening, at 7.30. Mr Stevens meets the electors of Christchurch at Kuightstown, at the Read-ing-room, at 7,30 to-night, and the Hon B. Richardson to-morrow, at the Oddfellows’ Hall. Coals by Railway.— ln reply to a question yesterday the Mayor said that up to the present time no reply had been received from the Government, in answer to the representations made by a deputation from the Council on the high rates charged for the carriage of coals on the lines of railway. Election op Mayor.— The nomination paper of Mr F. Hobbs tor the office of Mayor was the only one received up to four o’clock yesterday, the hour of closing. Mr B. B. Bishop was appointed returning officer, and the election will be formerly proclaimed on the 17th instant. Channelling op Oxford and Cambridge Terraces. —The works committee, through their chairman (Councillor Ick), intimated at yesterday’s meeting their intention of proceeding with the work of channelling Oxford and Cambridge Terraces in a little while, when the channelling of the streets east and west wil be completed.

Canterbury Sale Yards Company.— The annual general meeting of shareholders of the above company called for last evening, lapsed for want of a quorum, and was adjourned until this evening. All those interested are requested to attend to-night’s meeting, as unleiS at least sixteen shareholders are present no business can be transacted. New Racing Boat. —A new racing boat has just been finished by Mr Harrison, of Port Lyttelton. It is very handsomely finished, and is of Huon pine,'.3oft in length 4ft 2in beam, and 17in deep. It is intended to compete at the forthcoming regatta. The crew is to consist of S. Bamford, stroke; T. Harkiss, No 3; J. Q. Snoswell, No 2; andW. Bamford, bow; coxswain, C, Young. Widening op Colombo Street. —At yesterday’s meeting of the Council the report of the finance committee, having reference to the widening of Colombo street, was adopted, and the committee were authorised to confer with Mr Morten for the purchase of the 10 feet frontage required, at the correr opposite the Bank of New Zealand. Failing a satisfactory result, a notice to be served of the Council’s intention to take the whole section. Central Cricket Club.— A general meeting of the above club was held last night at the White Hart Hotel, Mr Childs in the chair. There was a large attendance of members. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Messrs Abbott, Herbert, Davis, and Baker were elected members of the club. Mr S. Phillip’s name was added to the selecting committee. Mr D. Caro was unanimously elected president. The Government having kindly placed at the club’s disposal their roller, it was decided to roll that portion of the ground now in use in Latimer square. After some business of a routine character, the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman. Tradesmen’s Athletic Club. —A committee meeting of the above club was he 1 d last evening at the Garrick Hotel, Mr J. F. Gough in the chair. The chairman said he had received a telegram that day from Edwards, who would arrive in Christchurch by the Taranaki, and go into training for the walking race. Resolutions were carried that the money be drawn from the Bank to pay for the use of the agricultural grounds ; that tenders be advertised for one publican’s and two refreshment booths, and that all tables of games be charged half a sovereign each. It was resolved that entries for members’ races should be made on the night of 13th December, and that persons desirous of joining the club must do so and pay their subscription on or before that date ; the entries for “ all-comers” events to be received on the ground. The handicaps will be made after the 16th inst. After transacting some minor business, the meeting adjourned.

Herr Krupp, the gun manufacturer, will send an enormous cannon to the Philadelphia Exhibition. The engine which is thus destined to rank amongst the products of civilisation and progress at the world’s fair weighs 55,500 kilogrammes.
