MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, December 2. (Before C. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.) Drunkenness and Indecency. —Francis Styce and Catherine Boyle, for the above offence, were fined 60s each. Horses and Cattle at Large.— The following cases were disposed of;—John Langdon, lined ss; John Patrick, 5s ; Samuel Ward, ss; James Rosser (two horses), 10s; James Wilson, ss; J. S. Buxton, 5s ; A. Lawrie 5s ; Peter Brodrick, 5s ; Thomas Aldridge, 5s ; Thomas Aldridge, for tethering a horse on footpath, 5s ; Henry Irving, 5s ; Michael Howard, 5s ; Matthew Thomas, ss; a case against Frederick Palmer, was adjourned for a week; Samuel Fleming, 5s j James Sinclair, ss.

Absent from Cab. —Albert Brown was fined 10s for being absent from bis cab. Driving an Unlicensed Vehicle. —Jas. Kearney was charged, on two informations, with driving an unlicensed vehicle for hire on the 9th and 19th November last. It appeared that a license had been granted by the late town clerk, which was subsequently cancelled before the 9th November, on the report of the inspector of hackney carriages. Defendant, who denied having received notice of cancellation, was fined 10s for each offence.

Driving Pigs during Prohibited Hours. —Martin Gattenmeyer, charged with driving pigs during prohibited hours, was fined 10s.

Obstructing the Footpath. John Gregg was charged with obstructing the footpath in Cathedral square, by placing a windlass thereon, and was fined 10s. Dog in the Park. —John Johnson, for allowing a dog to follow him in Hagley Park, the same not being led, was fined 10s, ASHBURTON. Friday, November 26. (Before G. L, Hellish, Esq., R.M.) Trespass of Cattle.— George Parkin, for having two cows at large fined ss, F. Doherty, for one cow fined ss. Hay T, Smith, for one cow fined ss. William Mitchell, for two horses fined ss. Thomas Brankin, for five horses fined ss. Malcolm Miller, for six horses fined ss, James Wallace, for one cow fined ss. Thomas Bradford, for one cow fined ss. Thomas Turton, for one calf fined fi. Frank Brown, for four horses fined 6s. Public House Ordinance.—C. KlingenBtein, for neglecting to have a lamp burning onj the Bth instant fined 10s. C. Klingenstein, for a similar offence on the 10th fined 10s.

Larceny as a Bailee.— George Webber was brought up charged with this offence, and remanded for eight days, to be brought up sooner if required. Obstructing the Free Passage of the Railway. —A, Dobson for an offence of this nature was fined £lO. Tuesday, November 30. (Before Alfred Saunders, Esq.) Larceny. —John Luk was brought up on remand charged with stealing a sovereign from James Norrie. Sergeant Felton, stationed at the Ashburton, stated that on the 20th instant he went to the London board-ing-house and saw a man named James Norrie lying on a sofa, He asked him if he had lost any money. Norrie said he had lost a sovereign (produced) from Mr Toppin. Sergeant Felton then arrested prisoner at the Somerset Hotel, and charged him with stealing a sovereign from the person of Norrie. Prisoner was slightly under the influence of drink. Prisoner made no statement. Sergeant Felton searched the prisoner and found half a sovereign and five shillings on him. James Norrie on being examined, said that he was a laborer residing at Ashburton, and on the 20th last he was at the London boarding-house and saw the prisoner there. He remembered prisoner putting his hand in his watch pocket, and within an hour after he missed the sovereign. Several other witnesses were examined, whose evidence went to show that the prisoner had taken the sovereign in question out of Nome's pocket while Norrie was intoxicated. Prisoner was committed for trial at the next session of the Supreme Court George Webber, on remand, was charged with stealing an axe, and sentenced to four teen days’ imprisonment with hard labor. Larceny as a Bailee. —George Webber was also brought up, charged with an offence of this nature. The Bench sentenced him to fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labor.
