ASTRONOMICAL NOTES FOR THE MONTH.

Last month was very unfavorable for observation, on account of the unsettled state of the weather, otherwise the aspect of the heavens, when a glimpse could be got about two hours after sunset, was beautiful, and will continue so during the present month. We have Venus in the West alter sunset. Jupiter still in the glare of the sun, but may be seen perhaps beiore the end of the month in the East, as a morning star. Mars and Saturn are both verging Westward, the former on the meridian 5Jh p.m„ and the latter at nearly 5h p.m. The sun is in the sign Sagittarius, and will be until the 22d 4h p.m., when he enters Capricorn. The length of day on the Ist will be about Hh 56m, and on the 15th about Ish 10m. The sun will attain his greatest southern declination on the 22d. The phases of the moou will be—First quarter, 6dlh27mp.m. Full moon, 13d 7h 16m p.m. Last quarter, ZOd 2h 26m a.m. Mew moon, 28d 6h35m a.m. The moon will be nearest to the earth 13d 3h a.m., and at greatest distance 26d 9h am. Mercury—9d 8h p.m. will be in descending node —on the 19th about midnight will be in aphelion—on the26d 8h p.m. will be in superior conjunction with the sun, and on the 28d 8h a.m. will be in conjunction with the moon. Mercury 3 deg4min north. Venus—l4d 2h a.m. at greatest distance from the sun, and on the 30d Oh a.m. will be in conjunction with the moon. Venus 2 deg 52 min north. Mars is an evening star, setting about 5 hours after the sun, and will be in conjunction with the moon 5d 3h a.m. Mars ldeg 58min north. JJEJupiter will be in conjunction with r u he moon 24d 5h p.m. Jupiter 4 deg 54 min north. Saturn is an evening star, setting nearly the same time as Mars, and will be in conjunction with the moon 4d 4h p.m. Saturn 2 deg 25 mir. north. Uranus will be on the meridian about 5h a.m. Declination, 15J deg north. Neptune will be on the meridian about 9h p.m., having 10 deg north declination.
