In the New South Wales Legislature, the Postmaster-General, in answer to a question relative to the dispute with Hall, the agent for the San Francisco Service, informed the House that Hall had not performed the contract, and his sureties had not paid up the sums for which they were responsible. • A letter has been received from Mr Goldsmith, of Melbourne, intimating that the effort to. get an Australian cricket team to proceed to New Zealand has proved quite abortive. Wellington, November 30. The Otago arrived from Nelson at 11 p.m. last night. She leaves for the South at three this afternoon. The Ladybird, from Nelson, and. the Phoebe, from Lyttelton, arrived at 9 a.m. The Fiji Banking Company held their annual meeting. The profit for the year amounted to £3897, and a dividend of 5 per cent was declared. Blenheim, November 29. A fire in High street to-day entirely destroyed the shop and premises of Messrs Snvth and Lowman, cabinet-makers. There beiug varnish, spirits of wine, anc a quantity of tow pn the premisen, tbey burned veiy rapidly, yet the brigade succeeded in confining the fire to the building where it broke out, although those on one side in close proximity, and being of light inflammable material, ignited several times, Messrs

November 29 William Draper, a young man recently ar« rived in the colony, wa<* missing from hi-< home in the Waimea since Tuesday. Mr Wason on Saturday found him hanging from a tree in the bush four miles from where he lived. He had been in a despondent state of mind for some time. Dunedin, November 29. The fire season has fully commenced. A fire broke out on Saturday at the Albion Soap Works. The damage is estimated at £IO7O, which is covered by iusurance in the Boyal and South British. Another fire, the third within four days, broke out this morning in George street on the premises of Mr Morrison, a grocer. The shop was entirely destroyed. The stock and furniture were insured for £2OO in the New Zealand office, and for a like sum in the South British. The stock and furniture were valued at £750. The building belonging to Mr Wilson was insured in the South British for £2OO. In both instances the fire brigade was quickly at the scene. DUNEDIN RACES. Dunedin, November 30. The races to-day were largely attended. The weather was beautiful. Maiden Plate, of 40 sovs, Pakeha, who had been heavily backed, was scratched.
