Messrs Miles Brothers and Co. report on October Ist: The third series of sales for the year wdll terminate tids evening, and it is estimated that about 17,000 bales have been bought in or held over, which quaniity will be offered with the new arrivals (which will probably amount to 80,000 bales), at the November sales, to open on the 23rd of that month. There lias been but little variation in the state of the market since our last report, poor and faulty wools, both washed and in the grease; being still depressed, the only noticeable alteration being in prices for really good fleeces, which during the last eight days have Improved about o|d to Id per lb, owing to increased foreign competition ; but during the scries considerable reserve has been observable on the part of the foreign trade. The total quantities catalogued amount to 293,135 bales, of which about 125,000 bales have been taken for Continental account. TALLOW AND HIDES. Messrs Milos Brothers and Co report : The tallow market has been very firm, with a good demand for all descriptions, and we quote good to fine Australian mutton at -18 s 6d to 50s, and fair to fine beef at 47s to 48s 6a. Hides of heavy weight have been in fair demand, but light and cow have been neglected. NEW ZEALAND HEMP. Messrs Miles Brothers and Co report:— There is no improvement to notice in this fibre, the demand being very limited, and while Manilla keeps dull no particular rise can take place. PRESERVED TINNED MEAT. Messrs Miles Brothers and Co report:—

The demand for tinned meats lias improved considerably, and higher rates are obtainable for some lines, especially for the smaller-sized tins, which are now scarce ; 6’s mutton arc now worth 5d per lb.
