RIFLE MATCH.

A match between ten men from H.M.S. Sappho and the same number—members of the Christchurch Volunteer Artillery, was fired off yesterday at the Hillsborough range. The conditions were seven shots each ; ranges, 200, 300, and 400 yards ; position—2oo yards, standing ; SCO, kneeling; and 400, any position. The Sappho men were victorious, winning by 21 points. SubLieut. Roope was in charge of the blue jackets, and Captain Craig of the C. V. A. The following are the scores : Sappho. He trusted that the C.V.A. would, at some future time, again meet their friends, and concluded by calling for three cheers for,the Sappho, which were heartily given. Sub-Lieut Roope then called for three cheers for the Christchurch Artillery, which were given in true British sailor style. Colonel Packe, who was present, expressed the pleasure he had experienced in witnessing the match, and said he would give a prize of one guinea to the highest scorer in the Sappho team. Eavis was then called forward, and received the money from the colonel.
