(Per Press Agency,") Auckland, November 15. The barque Director is now loaded in Kaipara with the first shipment of Kauri spars. It is the first shipment on account of Mr Russell’s Admiralty contract. The captain, who is an old American lumberer, declares that the timber is the finest he has ever seen. Some of the spars weigh fourteen tons. A deputation from the Board of Education had an interview with Dr Pollen to-day to endeavor to obtain a grant for school buildings. They stated that the Board was compelled to refuse the most trifling application for necessary buildings owing to the lack of funds. Dr Pollen replied that though the Government had already supplied £20,000 for current expenditure on education purposes, it would be difficult to supply more; but if the Board would decide upon a smaller sum which they could do with, Government would endeavor to accede to it. The sum actually required for buildings is £25,000. Onehunga, November 15, Sailed—Taranaki, at ten this morning for South. Passengers—Messrs Overton, Pellet, Given, Mrs Jones and family. Wellington, November 15. The lessee of the Queen’s Wharf has given the Public Works Department notice that he ii.tends to impose largely increased charges on all Government material passing over the wharf. This was stated by Hon E. Richardson to a deputation of members of the Chamber of Commerce, who waited upon him this morning to press upon the Government the necessity for immediately commencing the construction of the railway wharf. This action of the h ssee has caused Government to have steps taken with the view of providing temporary wharf accommodation, so that all Government material may be landed without being taken over the Queen’s Wharf, lion E. Richardson stated it was intended to have tenders called for the construction of the railway wharf, so soon as to secure its completion by the time the reclamation in progress had been extended as far as Mills’s foundry, and the railway formed to that point. It is reported at Taupo that about 100 Waikato natives have threatened a hostile visit to Tokano (a settlement at the south end of the Lakes), to obtain “ utu” for the desecration of the graves of some of their relatives by the Taupo natives. Tokano is in some excitement, and is sending to its friends for help. Most probably the honor of the Waikatos will be satisfied with a war dance and firing their guns over the desecrated graves. The steamer Wellington has been subsidised specially to convey this month’s outward mail from Port Chalmers to Manukau, where it will be transhipped into the Vasco de Gama, which will call at Auckland en route to Honolulu. The Wellington will leave Port Chalmers to-morrow and this port on Thursday. Blenheim, November 15, The railway to Picton will be opened on Wednesday next. The day will be a holiday, and the contractors will give a ball at night, Napieb, November 15. At Papakara a dozen Maoris forcibly removed the gates of the pound and removed eight horses, and threatened the poundkeeper and assistants, hut without actually assaulting them.
