CRICKET.
NORTH v. SOUTH. The U.C.CC. continued this match on Saturday last. On the previous Saturday the North made 157 in their first innings. Shortly before three o'clock the South commenced their first innings, Ollivier and E. Cotterill being the first to act on the defensive ; the latter, however, soon retired. One for 5. B. Parkerson filled the vacancy, and runs came freely, Souter receiving particular attention. With the score at 34, Parkerson was dismissed by a shooter from Fuller. Tin Hon S. G. Lyttelton next appeared, but a splendid bail ball from Fuller breaking back from the off disposed of him before he had time to score. Three for 52. H.Cotterili was next to retire. Four for 55. Alp< now came in, and with Ollivier mad< a stand. The latter, however, returned
an easy one to Fuller, and had to retire, having made 41 without previously giving a chance. He made a 5, two 4's and two 3's, principally to square leg ; five for 87. A. C. Wilson was next to appear, and with Alpe still further increased the score, but the latter playing round at a straight ball from Corfe, was clean bowled ; six for 105, of which Alpe made 27 by some good play. He effected some pretty cuts, and a leg hit for 4. There were only four singles in his score. With the exception of Harman who made two good hits to leg, none of the others made any stand, Wilson being not out for a well played 22, composed of a 4, a 3, three 2's and singles. The innings closed for 137, of which there were 17 byes. It is somewhat singular, and a matter to be regretted, that more cricketers do not practise long-stopping, for, with the exception of Alpe and Ollivier, we do not know of any one who can take this place in the field with any degree of success. In this match these two players were on the same side, and consequently the score of byes is very large. We hope to see an improvement in this before long, as nothing is so discouraging as a large number of extras. The North began their second innings, and at the call of time had made 25 runs for the loss of one wicket. The match will not be played out. The following is the score :
