NEWS OF THE DAY.

Inquest, —An inquest was held yesterday at the hospital, before J. W. S. Coward, Esq, coroner, on the body of the unfortunate man who was found drowned near the boat sheds on Sunday last. In addition to the particulars given in our notice, the only fresh information elicited was that at ten o’clock on last Saturday week a man, with a black coat similar to the one worn by the deceased, hired a boat for two hours, about ten o’clock that morning, from Mrs McConnell on the Avon, paying for it at the time. He then had a Maori kit in his hand, apparently containing refreshment, and before leaving borrowed a glass from that lady. As the boat was not returned the same night she went up the river the following morning, and found it near Stanmore bridge adrift, the tumbler and Maori kit (empty) being in the boat. No post mortem had been held, and a verdict was returned of “ Found drowned.”

It is a well ascertained fact that housewives are seldom out of temper on a washing day, if they get well on with their work. But if they have obtained inferior soap, and their hands are chafed therewith, there is generally a late tea, and the fireside is not pleasant until the children are got to repose. When purchasing soap, if you ask for the star brand, and see that you get it, there will be no fear of late washing or chapped hands, as the greatest care is taken when it is being manufactured to render it free from all injurious properties. Besides, it is the best, the bars are the largest, and it is the cheapest soap in the market. Try, and you will be convinced. —[ A dvt. ]
