ASHBURTON ROAD BOARD.

This Board- held their ordinary monthly meeting at the Road Board offices, Ashburton, on Tuesday, the 2nd instant. The members present were Messrs 0. H. Dowding, T. Bullock, J. Hunt, and D. Williamson. Mr Grigg being absent, Mr 0. H. Dowding was voted to the chair. The engineer reported that he had given a final certificate to George Compton re his contract for immigrants’ cottages. That in accordance with a resolution passed at the last meeting of the Board he bad examined the portion of the by-road off the Ashburton and Beach road petitioned to be made. It commences from the southeast angle of reserve No 739, leased by Mrs Gibson, and goes east for 58 chains ; it is principally through a deep gully, and the cost of mak'ug the 53 chains would not be much under £IOO. That the labour gang had been employed during the past month, completing bridge. and approaches, and putting in a culvert on Church road, repairing junction of the Boundary road with the Lougbeach road, and north approach to the Ashburton railway bridge ; making bridge and two culverts, tilling up gully and making 15 chains of road through the swamp on Graham's road That he suggested that so soon as the Board are in funds Elgin street, the continuation of Elgin road through the eastern portion of the township, to the railway station and post office be made- Further that the labour gang make the footpath along east street between the Somerset Hotel and post office. The inward and outward correspondence was next read and considered. In reply to a letter from Mr William Gilmour informing the Board that Mr James Bcott refused to allow him to open a fresh shingle pit in order to complete his contract. It was resolved—“ That Mr William Gilmour be informed that the Board believes he can make arrangements for obtaining shingle on the western side of the Lowclifli’s esfate, and that unless he satisfactorily completes his contract on the Coldstream Swamp road at once, the Board intends doing it at his risk.” Resolved—" That theconsideration of a letter sent by Messrs Hole and Stevenson be postponed to the next meeting of the Board.” Resolved—“ That the Board, not having any funds at their disposal, they are unable at present to make the 58 chains of the by-road off the Ashburton and Beach road, petitioned for,” Resolved—“ That so soon as the Board are in a position to construct Elgin street, the engineer prepare a section for the same, and call for tenders for the work.” Resolved —“ That the consideration of making the footpath in East street, between the Somerset Hotel and the Post office, be postponed to the next meeting of the Board.” Resolved—” That in reply to a letter from the chairman of the Upper Ashburton Board he be informed that this Board see no reason to alter their decision arrived at when the deputation waited on the Board on the 7th September last.” Resolved —“ That the Provincial Secretary be communicated with, and asked to reply to a letter from this office dated the 12th ultimo, and relative to making reserve for Road Board purposes in the township. &c.” Resolved—“ That the Secretary/or Public Works be requested to cause the grant due to this Board last September to be placed to their credit as the Board have a heavy overdraft to meet, Further, that the sum of £3BB 10 ■ mentioned in the Secretary for Public Works’ letter of the 12th ultimo as having been passed for payment to this Board, be also forwarded to the Bank of New Zealand, Ashburton, to be placed to the credit of the Board.” Resolved—“ That the Secretary for Public Works be requested to have a level crossing put in on the railway at Shepherd’s Creek on the Great South road in order to give access to the Road bridge on the west side of the railway.” Resolved—- “ That a well be sunk on reserve No 1689 for the use of the immigrants’cottages situated on the said reserve.” Resolved—“ That the accounts as per pay sheet, and amounting to £SOO Os Id, be passed for payment.” Resolved—“ That this Board do now adjourn to Tuesday, the 7th of December, at 1 p.m.”
