The Bank of New Zealand half-yearly-meeting, held to-day, showed a nett profit for the half-year, after providing for bad and doubtful debts, the sum of £47,103. Balance undivided last half-year, £16,974. Total, £64,077. A dividend of ten per cent, and a bonus of 5s per share was declared. Napier, October 25.
Trial borings commence to-morrow to ascertain the nature of the bottom along the line of the proposed harbor works. The line will be so situated that the works, when constructed, will reduce the channel to about a third of its present width. A fatal accident occurred in the inner harbor. A boat containing four men capsized, and one Nicholas Christian Fredericksen was drowned. The rest got ashore. Wanganui, October 25.
The Supreme Court opened to day. There was only one criminal case, Regina v Collins, late clerk of the Foxton tramway, for embezzlement. The Grand Jury brought in no bill, and the case dropped. It is considered that the tramway accounts were kept in very loose manner. The|wife of a carpenter named Hughes committed suicide by drowning herself in the river, on Sunday morning. She had been in a desponding state for some time, but was thought quite safe. She leaves a child two years old. Wellington, October 25, It is stated that his Excellency the Governor will visit Canterbury next mouth, probably leaving Wellington about the 6th proximo. He will be present at the races. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) furnish the following produce telegrams;—“London, 2nd October, 1875. Wool sales closed firmly at an average decline of to 2d. 20,000 bales have been held over for future disposal. 15,000 bales have been withdrawn during the past sales. 120,000 bales have been taken for export for continental de mand. There is a limited trade in the manufacturing districts, and is unchanged. Next sales will commence on the 23rd ef November.” “ London, 14th October. Tallow is ready of sale ; public sales of Australian have comprised 3000 casks ; mutton, £sl per ton ; beef, £49. Leather: trade demand quiet. The arrivals are heavy and the market quiet for wheat, stocks are heavy. Adelaide is worth 54s per 4961bs ; New Zealand, 625.” Wellington, Oct 26, Arrived —Taupo, from Lyttelton, at 6.30 ; Ringarooma from Lyttelton, at 11.15 a.m.; Ladybird, from Picton; Ladybird, goes South at four. DUNEDIN, October 25. On the representation of the Macandrew Demonstration Committee that the banquet was not a political affair, the Mayor agreed to declare a public holiday. To-night, however, he refuses, as he has learnt that it will he purely a provincial demonstration, and the committee passed a resolution on Saturday to that effect. The Mayor’s decision is approved by a great many. Dunedin, October 26. The Union Steamship Company have telegraphed to John Darling, their building inspector at home, to build and despatch without delay a steamer of the same dimensions as the Bruce, to be called the Wanaka.
