The Sydney Morning Herald understands “ that the Hon John Kobertson, acting as Colonial Treasurer, has made arrangements by which the pilot service of Port Jackson will be done by a steamship instead of by boats, on and after the let of December next. The Government have approved of a contract with the Waterview Bay Dry Dock and Engineering Company, for the construction of a steam-vessel specially adapted to meet the requirements of the port; but, in order that no delay longer than is absolutely necessary should take place, the Government steamer Thetis is to be handed over to the Marine Board on the Isth of November, and will be in readiness to begin the new system at the time named. The inefficiency of the present pilot service has been a matter of frequent and serious complaint in the Legislature ; and there is reason to hope that the new system, which has long been demanded, will establish a much better state of things.”
