COLLEGE SPORTS.
The annual College sports commenced this morning on the grounds attached to the College. The weather, though fine, was somewhat unfavorable, as a heavy N. W. wind was blowing. The following were the events decided up to the time of our reporter leaving : Putting the Weight, open to the whole school ; weight 161bs. G. Westenra (26ft Bin) 1 B. Moorhouse (25ft 3in) ... 2 E. Cotterell (24ft 10in) 3
Three others competed. Throwing the Cricket Ball, open to the whole school. E. V. Hamilton 1 G. Westenra 2 J. Davie ... ... ... ... 3 Six entered for this, but the first three were not nearly reached by the others. 100 Yards Flat Kace, open to the whole school. G. Westenra 1 E. V. Hamilton f F. Johnston ... ... ... + A capital race between the three placed, Time, Usee,
100 Yards Flat Race, for boys under 14. Knight (tertius) .. 1 Stafford 2 R, Strode 3 Eleven started. A capital race between Strode and Stafford for second place. Time, LSsecs. 100 Yards Flat Race, for boys under twelve. Watson ... ... ... ... 1 Mathias 2 Cox 3 Nine came to to the post, but Craig was left on the scratch. Watson had it all his own way, and won easy. Time, 14secs. Quarter Mile, open to whole school. E. V. Hamilton 1 J. M. Davie 2 Robinson ... ... ... ... 3 The race was looked upon as a gift to Johnston, who could have won it easily, but from an unfortunate misunderstanding of the starter's remarks he was left on the scratch. Hamilton came with a rush at the end of the race and won by about three yards, second and third close together. Time, 68secs. Quarter Mile, for boys under fourteen. Stafford 1 Rhodes ... ... ... ... 2 Mile Race, open to whole school. G. Westenra ... ... ... 1 F. Johnston 2 Three started, but Whitcombe pulled tip. Westenra ran a good race, and though Johnston stuck to him gamely, he could not overhaul him. Time, smin HOsecs. Mile Race, for boys under fourteen. H. Mathias 1 Blakiston ... ... ... ... 2 Rhodes ... ... ... ... 3 Mathias ran as game as a pebble throughout this race, and won capitally, second and third well up. Time, smin 54secs.
