DROLLERIES OF A LIVERPOOL AUCTIONEER.
The following recently took place at a sale in Liverpool. Of course the auctioneer was a Hibernian “Now thin, gintlemen, here y’ar, a dress-coat fit for a prince. Cut off the shwally tails, and ye’ve got a jacket to hand, and material for a couple of wescoats. Eighteen-pince! Ye shall have it, and welcome, Mr Hooley. Sould again and got the money. Luck here now—here’s a bargain for any of ye that’s goin to a fancy ball.” He displays a dilapidated patchwork quilt. “ Just the article for the town hall Wrap this around ye, an’ go barefutted, an’ you’re ready-made as a converted haythen chief from Timbuctoo, or a giutleman of the period from the royal coorts of Ben Johnson street. Here y’ar agin ! Here’s a pair of moleskin breeches that’s fit for the Prince of Wales him-silf. They’re the property of a gentleman who is leaving the country —for his country’s good. Here, I’ll throw in the boots wid ’em. Feel the weight o’ thim ! Five shillin’ for the lot ! Nobody bid ? Thim’s the boot’s that’ll make the bobbies respect ye of a Saturday night down Marybone. Luck here, ye shall have a leather belt wid the breeches. Feel that now ! That’s yer sort o’ buckle to larrap the missus and childer wid. Five shillin’, eb ? Cf’long, and shave yerself ! Three and six ? Well, it’ll roon me, but take them for luck ! Ah, here’s a chance for the ladies ! A next to bran’ new green winsey dress, wid six flounces and a body full enough to honld any twq of ye comfortable. This was the property of a lady of quantity as tuck to drink, and was obliged to mortgage her personal effects to an uncle of hers in Vauxhall road there beyant. Ladies, don’t all speak at wanst. Four and six for the green winsey ! ”
