MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, October 15. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.)

Violent Assault,— J. E. Anderson was charged with having violently assaulted his wife the previous day. A charge of drunkenness was also preferred against the accused. Mrs Anderson stated that her husband came home drunk, and struck her in the mouth, breaking one of her front teeth. She was obliged to go to a neighbour’s house for protection. Her husband followed, and compelled her to return, when he again struck her. When in drink he was an exceedingly violent man, and she desired to be protected from him. Mr Meadows, who lives near accused, said Mrs Anderson had rushed to his wife for protection, and at the time her mouth was bleeding. The accused came to the house, and insisted on her returning, and struck her when she had gone some little distance away. The accused pleaded hard for one more chance, and said if his Worship would give him this, and his wife would forgive his conduct, he would never touch drink again. His Worship told him that to do so would be his only hope, and after suggesting to Mrs Anderson to if possible forget and forgive this time, he adjourned the charges for four weeks, with a view of seeing how the accused had acted in the interval.
