The Globe. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1875. NEWS OF THE DAY.
New City Councillor. Councillor Hawkes, the newly-elected member, took his seat at the Council table yesterday afternoon. Saturday Half-Holiday:—A public meeting will be held at the Music Hall on Monday next, for the purpose of making a satisfactory arrangement for the observance of a Saturday half-holiday as regards the building and other trades. ACCIDENT. —An accident happened to Mr W. Wilson, sub-contractor of the Orari Bridge works, on the night of the Geraldine Races. He was returning from the races when his horse started and threw him in the river-bed. He was removed to Mr Wadsworth’s Hotel, and medical aid called in, when it was found that he had received a ▼ery severe shaking. The San Francisco Mail. —We were shown yesterday the following telegram sent to Mr George Mackay, agent for the N.Z.S.S. Co in Lyttelton, from Auckland—“ Phcebe, bar bound. Left Manakau this (Monday) morning; expected at Nelson to-morrow (Tuesday), and at Wellington, Wednesday morning.” From the above it will be seen that the mail will not arrive in Lyttelton till Thursday morning. Many people do not know the reason why some descriptions of soap, when being used, cause the hands to smart and feel sore. It is simply owing to the imperfect knowledge of some soap boilers, who not being thoroughly acquainted with the ingredients thej are using, do not compound them in a scientific manner, or as is more commonly the case, that manufacturers either try to pass off a spurious adulterated article, or else by using an undue quantity of the cheapest commodities, make one of inferior quality. We are aware that the Star Brand Soap is made on the strictest-- principles of chemical affinity, and that every care is taken by the manufacturers to produce an article possessing the strongest abstergent properties. All persons, whether old colonists or new arrivals, should use the Star Brand Soap, as it is the best in this market, [Advt,]
