Conyers, second officer of the ship City of Auckland, has been sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labor, for broaching cargo during the voyage; Bertrand, a seaman, has been sentenced to three months; Kerrish, a passenger, to seven days; Spier Dick, a passenger, discharged; and Percival, a boy, to forty-eight hours. The evidence showed the second officer to be the prime mover. On this account the other sentences were light. The Bench severely condf tnned the heinousnessof the mate's offence, knowing the danger incurred in creeping over twentyfive tons of powder with naked lights. The Governor has granted the petition for the release of Legget, late clerk of the Provincial Council, convicted of embezzlement. He is now at liberty. A further gold discovery is reported in a creek near Whangarei. A mysterious case of supposed drowning has occurred at Onehunga. A splash was heard from the wharf, and the cry " Save me," " Save me." A seaman from the Ladybird jumped over and swam about, but could see no one. The tide was so strong it nearly carried him away, but a rope was thrown to him, and he was drawn ashore in an exhausted state. There is no clue to the source of the cry. Between seven and eight o'clock this morning the notorious Cyrus Haley attempted to escape from a gang of prisoners working at Bell hill. He ran as far as the junction of Moray place and Stuart street, when he was fired upon by Warder Miller and shot twice, being killed on the spot. The criminal sessions opened before Judge Williams to-day. His charge was merely one of congratulation on the lightness of the calendar, and hope was expressed that a suitable court house would soon be built. Anne Hardee pleaded guilty to larceny, and sentence was deferred.
