SUNDAY CRIES.

[From the Zoo.'] An angry roar arose from the Zoo Of “Shame!” and “Bosh!” and “A nice to do !” A whispered rumour was in the air, It was uttered low by the old brown bear; On the top of his pole he had heard one say, “ Our Sunday lounge will be done away ; Tis crime at Brighton to gaze at fish, And soon to close these grounds they’ll wish. ” The blue-nosed ape from his dim retreat Took up the strain with chatter sweet — “ What, close on Sunday the tranquil Zoo ! What will my grand relations do ?” The graceful antelope scratched his head, And answered, “ Their Sundays they’ll pass

in bed.” The elephant waved his tortuous trunk, Replying, “And then they will all get drunk. ” The tiger took a leap in his den And growled, “ The swells will be well sold

then.” The sagacious seal reared high his snout—- “ Shut up on Sunday ! What rot—get out !” The white bear muttered, “ Upon my soul, If this goes on I’ll go back to the Pole.” And the parrot shriked, * ‘ Left all in the lurch, They’ll bother us next to go to church.” The lion roared in his gruffest tones, “ Sanctified humbugs, I’ll pick their bones !’ So birds and beasts of every age Whistled and bellowed and screamed with rage, Till the keeper came up with a terrible

staff, And thrashed the hyena for daring to laugh W. E. W.
