The Goodwood Cup, value 300 sovs, added to a sub. of 20 sovs each, h.ft. Two miles and a-half. 24 subs. Lord Ailesbury’s Aventuridre 1 Sir J. Astley’s Scamp 2 Mr Marshall’s Trent ... ••• ... 3 Camelion, Ladylove, Kaiser, and Apology, also ran. Betting—7 to 4 agst Apology, 4to 1 agst Kaiser, 9to 2 agst Camelion, 8 to 1 agst Aventuriere, 10 to 1 agst Scamp, 20 to 1 agst Ladylove. Trent was the first to show the way, fob lowed by Scamp and Camelion, to whom succeeded Aventuriere and Apology side by side, with Kaiser and Ladylove in the rear. They proceeded in these positions along the straight; but on making the bend out of the course, Scamp rushed to the front, and went on with a lead of a couple of lengths, Trent going on second, with Aventuriere third, and to these succeded Camelion and Apology, with Kaiser and Ladylove still in the rear. On reappearing in sight, Trent and Scamp were seen side by side racing for the lead clear of Lord Ailesbury’s mare and Camelion, with Apology and Kaiser drawing forward ; and as they made the bend for home the leader took close order and ran in company into the Dip. Here Scamp again gave way to Trent, who held a slight lead into the rails, where he was beaten, leaving Sir John’s colt once more in front; but on nearing the distance, Aventuriere came up on the inside, and, getting the best of the final straggle, won a fine race by half-a-length from Scamp. Trent finished a bad third, with the others pulling up as placed. Time by Dent’s chronometer, smiu 11 l-ssec.
