At a meeting of the Board of Education a letter was received from the Chancellor of the University, in reply to one by the Board dated August 28th, respecting students from Auckland College. A resolution was adopted thanking the Chancellor for his courtesy in entering into explanation on the points raised by the Board, and confirming their view that college students had actually kept the terms of the year. The Board, however, regretted that the Chancellor had not seen his way to remove the discredit unjustly put upon those students by gazetting their names as having failed to pass the examination for which they had not presented themselves. Gisborne, September 23. A petition has been signed by about 600 inhabitants of Poverty Bay supporting the Abolition Bill, and praying it be brought into force this session.
