MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, September 23, * (Before i)r Back and His Worship the Mayor.) Vagrancy. —Alice Beatrice Gray alias Alice Greaves, a young girl, was brought up a charge of vagrancy. From the evidence of Constable Beck it appeared that accused had forced her way into an empty house oft Colombo street. The owner of the house complained to him, and he took her into custody. Evidence was given of the accused having been an inmate of the Orphanage and subsequently a servant at the Industrial school. Several situations had been obtained for her, but she would not remain in them. Her mother, who is a bad character, had told the police that if something were not done with the girl, she would soon be on the streets. In reply to the Bench, accused said she was seventeen years of age', inspector Buckley said the girl’s mother said she was only fifteen. Eemanded for one day to allow of enquiries being made as to the age of accused. Horses and Cattle at Large.— For permitting horses and cattle to wander, the following persons were dealt with : —John Bergman fined ss; James Chambers ss; E. J. Joblin ss; R. M. Creswell (two informations); Geo Chisnall ss; G. H. Moore five horses) 10s; Win. Harris ss; Geo. Steel ss; N. J. Suckling ss; Edward Jones ss; John Sandford ss; and Edward George ss. Absent from Horse and Vehicle.— John Allan and James Evans, charged with this offence, was each fined 10s. Obstructing the Footpath. Robert Macfarlane, summoned for obstructing the footpath with his horse, was fined 10s. Edward George, summoned for allowing some leather to remain on the footpath, was also lined 10s. Causing an Obstruction.— Samuel Dobbinson and Thomas Foster, summoned, for obstructing the road with their fish carts, were each lined 10s. Riding on Footpath. —Francis Wood, charged with riding on the footpath, was fined 10s. No Light on Scaffolding. —Thomas Tillman, summoned on two informations for neglecting to keep a light on some hoarding erected by him, was fined £l. Breach of Hackney Carriage Ordinance.—Robert Falloon, summoned for carrying three passengers in his cab, was fined 10s. Unregistered Dog.— Richard Wright, charged with being the owner .of an unregistered dog, was fined 20s. Burning Gorse. —Robert Raton was summoned for burning gorse on land at Addington not occupied by him. After the evidence of Mr J. Ward and a boy in his employ, had been taken, the Bench, dismissed the case. Breach of Domain Laws. —Archibald White and William Bell, two boys, were charged with climbing over a fence in the park. The park ranger deposed to the lads climbing over the fence on the 18th September into the plantations, and where there is no thoroughfare. Fined 5s each and cautioned. AssAult, —On the application of the complainant the case of assault, 'Jane Campbell against Win. Haldane, was adjourned for a week. Mr Thomas, addressing the Bench, said that on an information for assault in which he had been retained, an ample apology had been made, and he would, ask their Worships to allow the charge to be withdrawn. The Bench consented, and the case was withdrawn. Wife Desertion. —The case of Lydia Lloyd against Joseph Lloyd was adjourned until the Ist October.
