CHRISTCHURCH CRICKET CLUB.

The annual meeting of the above club was held at Warner’s Hotel on Saturday evening. There was a moderate attendance. Mr ,E. Hill was voted to the chair. The secretary read the following report:— “ In presenting the statement of receipts and expenditure for the past year, your committee have to draw attention to the fact that not only has there been great delay in the payment of subscriptions on the part of some members, but that others have not paid their subscriptions up to the present time, although nearly all have been repeatedly solicited to do so. This state of thing is in any case reprehensible, but it is much more so in respect of members who take an active part in the game during the season, and who play in almost every match, to the exclusion of others who, although possibly inferior in cricketing ability, have at least been prompt in their payments. It is absolutely necessary that Rules 5 and 7 should be strictly enforced in future ; and the meeting may probably consider it desirable to pass some resolution which shall have the effect of preventing members from playing, at least in club matches, who do not conform to the abovementioned rules. “ In previous years the amount of rent paid to the U.C.C.O. for use of ground has been £2O, Last year, however, a demand for £3O was made, to which your committee declined to accede, offering, by way of compromise, to pay a rental of £25, The U.C.C.O. refused to agree to this proposal, and brought the matter before the Park and Domain Board in accordance with the provisions of the lease in regard to disputes arising as to the amount of rental. The Board was of opinion that the sum of £3O was a fair contribution on the part of the Christchurch Cricket Club, but your committee have throughout declined to pay the high rental which was sought to be obtained by the propriety club. If the club can only obtain the use of the ground upon payment of so large a sum as £3O, it is quite impossible, in its present strength, that it

can find funds for providing cricketing materials, and for other unavoidable expenses. The sura of £2O has been paid to the treasurer of the U.C.C.O. “The committee found it necessary to make a call towards paying off liabilities, and fixed the amount at ss, at the same time asking members able and willing to do so to give a further sum as a donation. In response to this call £7 IHs has been received, and an additional amount of about £4 6s has yet to come in. The unpaid subscriptions amount to £6 14s 6d, only part of which, your committee regret to say, can be reckoned upon. “ The treasurer’s statement shows that the total receipts for the year have been £sl 15s, and the expenditure £SO oslod. The cash in hand amounts to £1 14s 2d, and the liabilities to £l6 17s lid, against _ which there are assets in the shape of unpaid calls and subscriptions, amounting to about £lO ; and the above mentioned balance of £1 14s 2d, leaving a deficiency of £5 3s 9d, exclusive of any balance, over and above £2O, which may have to be paid for use of ground,” The treasurer read a detailed statement of accounts, the results being as stated above. The report and balance sheet were unanimously adopted. The rules were passed without amendment. The election of officers for the ensuing year was then proceeded with, and resulted as follows President, Mr W. H. Wynn Williams ; vice-president, Mr J. R. Hill ; hon treasurer, Mr R. P. Glen ; hon secretary, Mr G. Mclntyre ; committee, Messrs J. Fowler, G. Turner, E. Hill, E. S. Harley, and J. S. Monck. Mr E. Fowler was unanimously elected captain of the first eleven, and Mr F. J. Reeder as captain of the second eleven. The secretary explained the state of matters relative to use of ground, and the position which had been taken up by the committee in respect of the demand made by the U.C.C.O. for an increased rental. It was unanimously resolved —“ That the action of the committee relative to rent of ground be endorsed, and that this meeting approves of a further sum of £5 being paid to the U.C.C.0,, making a total of £25 for the past year.” A vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring officers, and to the chairman, and the proceedings terminated.
