CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

A meeting of the Board of Governors of the College was held yesterday at 10 a.m. Present —Mr H. B. Gresson (chairman), the Primate, Revs W. W, WBlock, C. Fraser, J. Puller, W. J. Habens, Dr Turnbull, Messrs H. J. Tancred, Potts, Inglis, W. J, W. Hamilton, T, W. Maude. The first business was the election of five governors, to fill the seats rendered vacant by the resignation of Sir Cxacroft Wilson, Messrs 0. 0. Bowen, A. 0. Knight, J. Studholme, and W. Rolleston. Mr Tancred moved—“ That the Board proceed to fill up the vacancies caused by the resignation of Sir Cracroft Wilson, Messrs W. Rolleston, A. C, Knight, and, by absence from the province, of Mr J. Studholme and Hon C, C. Bowen. Mr Potts seconded the motion, which was agreed to. . The following were the candidates for the vacancies :—His Honor Judge Johnston, Hon J. B. A. Acland, Hon G, Buckley, Messrs Mellish, F, J. Garrick, R. W. Fereday, and J. N, Toss will. On the ballot being taken, the following gentlemen were declared duly elected : His Honor Mr Justice Johnston, Messrs J. N. Tosswill, G. L. Mellish, who were the only three receiving the requisite minimum number of votes.

A second ballot was then taken, resulting in the election of the Hon J. B. A. Acland. A third ballot was taken, but none of the three remaining candidates received a sufficient number of votes. Rev Mr Fraser moved—“ That all vacancies occurring in the Board of Governors shall be declared at a meeting of the Board, and nominations to fill such vacancies shall be received at the following meeting of the Board.” . The Primate seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Rev Mr Habens moved—“ That the three professors be requested to prepare proposals for the establishment of a Professorial Board, and to submit their views upon the matter to this Board- at an early date.” They had frequently had to consult the Pro feasors, and he thought it would be better to have the prolessors united in one body, and besides, individual professors would feel themselves more at liberty to make suggestions. It might happen that difficulties might arise between the Board of Governors and one or more of the Professors, and it would be better to have correspondence with a body recognised by the Governors than with individual professors. The Rev J. Buller (seconded the motion, which, after a slight discussion, was agreed The chairman reported that the catalogues of tha Reference Library were in course of preparation, and would shortly be ready for issue. The list for the circulating library was being copied, and was nearly completed. Plans for the new Public Library were laid upon the table, and the date of the tenders being received fixed for 24th September. Mr Hamilton moved—“ That the plans as submitted be approved by the Board, and

the action taken by the committee confirmed.” Rev W. J, Habens seconded the motion, which was carried. The chairman reported that the deputation appointed by the Board had waited upon the Government, and submitted a modified plan drawn by the architect, and they had forwarded a letter to the following effect:— “ Provincial Secretary’s Office, “ 11th September, 1875. “Sir, —With reference to the interview between the Government and a deputation from the Board regarding the alteration of position of the addition to the Museum, I have the honor to state that the Government will have no objection to accept the amended plan as forwarded by the architect, whereby the additional building is to be built on the eastern end of the present Museum. I would suggest that if possible the architect should endeavor byreducing the ornamentation on the inner or court-yard side of the now building, to obtain more accommodation, provided that the amount of work to be done by the contractor be not interfered with. “ I have, &c, “W. M. Maskell, “ Provincial Secretary, “ Chairman of Board of Governors.” The Rev W, J. Habens moved —“ That the action of the committee be approved by the Board, and that the modified plans for the Museum be also adopted.” Mr Hamilton seconded the motion, which was agreed to. A letter was read from the architect, pointing out that tile change of site would entail additional office expenses. The Rev W. J. Habens moved —“ That the letter be referred to the committee with recommendation for its favorable consideration.” Rev J. Buller seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The chairman reported that a sum of money had been remitted to England for the purchase of chemical apparatus for the laboratory of the College. A recommendation was received from the committee as to certain alterations in the subjects for examination. It was resolved that the recommendation of the committee be adopted. A recommendation was received from the Professors that there should be two terms during the year, the annual College examination to take place at the end of the second term.

On the motion of the Rev C. Fraser, it was resolved—“ That the recommendation of the Professors be adopted.” It was resolved that the scheme of annual examination, forwarded by the Professors, should be adopted by the Board of Governors,

On the recommendation of the Professors, was decided that the matriculation examination beheld in the first week preceding the first term in each year. The Board then adjourned.
