HEATHCOTE ROWING CLUB.
The annual general meeting of the Heathcote Rowing Club was held on Saturday evening, at the Wharf Hotel, Woolston. Mr G. A. Clark occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. The minutes of last general meeting were read and confirmed.
The chairman then called on the hon sec to read the annual report. Mr J.W. Davis (hon sec) then read the report, as follows : “ 4th September, 1875.
“ Your committee regret that in presenting this, the fifth annual report, they cannot announce that the club has made much progress during the past season. “The Challenge Cups held by the club were both competed for at the Heathcote regatta, and both lost; the Mayor’s Cup (Mr Jameson’s, for four-oars) being won by the Cure Club, Kaiapoi; and Messrs Coates’ Cup (sculling) by the Canterbury R.C. The Heathcote crew, A. K. Pavitt, G. A. Clark, F. Pavitt, and J. W, Davis (stroke) lost all chance of winning the Mayor’s Cup, through the coxswain steering them into a post early in the race. Both of the above, being Challenge Cups, will be competed for again at the next Heathcote regatta. The adult four did not compete at the Kaiapoi regatta, owing to some members of the crew having business engagements. The junior pair-oared races, at the Heathcote and Kaiapoi regattas, were won by the Heathcote pair, H. and R. Nankiville, and the special junior sculling race, at Kaiapoi, by R. Nankiville. The H.R.C. youths’ were second in the junior four-oared races, at Kaiapoi and Heathcote, the crew being composed at the Heathcote, of W. Stringer, R. Nankiville, H. Nankiville, and F. Sheath, and at Kaiapoi, of F. Sheath, R. Nankiville, H. Nankiville, and B, A. Pavitt, J, Smith steered all the club crews during the season. We recommend that a trophy be presented to each of the Nankiville’s for their diligence in training during the past season, “ During a gale in July last the club met with a very heavy loss, the boat shed being blown over and the four-oared outrigger Heathcote badly smashed, the other boats being also injured. In accordance with a resolution passed at a special general meeting the shed has been re-erected, and arrangements made for repairing the boats. The work was entrusted to Mr Rees, who reports that the Heathcote can be repaired, but at considerable expense. “ From the satisfactory manner in which he Ims hitherto done the club work entrusted to him, your committee have every confidence that he will make a good job of the Heathcote, In consequence of the heavy loss sustained, the committee did not feel justified in procuring the two pleasure boats which it was decided at a previous meeting should be procured. “When it became known that the club had sustained a heavy loss, several friends came forward to assist it, amongst others our president forwarded us a cheque for £lO 10s, and Mr W. Savage presented us with the four-oared outrigger Waterlily, the boat in which the Lyttelton crew won the first interprovincial race at the Heathcote. “ Werecommend that the following gentlemen be elected as honorary life members, viz—Mr Justice Williams, our first president, and for the past three years one of our vice-presidents, and one of the most liberal supporters of the club ; J. L. Coster, Esq, our president for the past three years, for the great interest he has taken in the welfare of tbe club and his liberality; and Messrs W. Montgomery and A. Duncan, who have been our vice-presidents since the formation of the club, for their liberality and support; and Mr W. Savage for his handsome present of the four-oared boat Waterlily. “In conclusion, your committee would urge upon all members the advisability of at once paying their season’s subscriptions, so as to enable the incoming committee to get the club property put into thorough repair. “J, W. Davis, Hon Sec.”
The Treasurer, Mr H. A. Bamford, read the balance-sheet, which showed that the receipts during the year had been £lO6 2s 6d, and the expenditure for the same period £lO2 Cs sd, leaving a balance of £3 6s Id. The liabilities were about £8 10a at present,
but would be considerably increased when the boats had been repaired. The report of the custodian (Mr H. A. Bamford) was read as follows : “ Boat Shed—Blown over during a gale in July last. Has been re-erected, and is now better than when first built.
