Auckland, September 4.

A whole family consisting of a wife and five children, at Mount Eden, are seriously ill from drinking goat’s milk. One child has died, and another is not expected to live. The whole family were seized with violent vomiting immediately after • taking the milk, and continued retching for several hours. The goats’ udder, subsequent to milking, became much swollen, but when she was milked, she had only a lump the size of a pea on the teat. The cause of the poisoning is not explained.

Grahamstown, Sept 3,

A whole family living here narrowly escaped death from poisoning. They had been drinking water from an iron tank which had been patched up with whitelead. The Thames burgess roll contains the names of thirty females. New Plymouth, Sept 3.

The ship Halcione anchored in the roadstead last night. All are well on board. The doctor reports twelve cases of measles on the voyage, but all recovered. She experienced a terrific hurricane on August 15th, after which calm weather until arrival. Up fill ten a.m. had landed ninety-six immigrants, when the weather becamethreatening in the roadstead. The ship again put to sea. She will probably go on to Wellington. She has aboard the harbormaster and others from here.

A locomotive passed over the Wairakirbo bridge yesterday. The railway is expected to be finished at the end of the month.
