Buyers—Bank of New Zealand, £l7 15s ; National Bank, 70s ; South British, 475; National Insurance, 24s rts. Sellers —Colonial Bank, 28s, Caledonian, 85s. Wellington, September 1. The Tribune says there is not the least foundation for the statement which has been industriously circulated that the Government intend to abandon the Local Government Bill. They will first push-pn the Abolition Bill, and thereafter proceed with the other. If the second Bill does not become law this session as well as the first one, it will not be from any wish of the Government to that effect, but will arise wholly either from the Opposition insisting upon the waste of public time, or from the apathy of the House. It is well that the situation should be understood and realised thus early. Dunedin. September 1. The train on the Dunedin and Clutha line yesterday ran a trial trip of 50 miles in two and a half hours, and from Gore to Invercargill, 40 miles, in <?ne. hour and a half. At a large meeting held last night 600 persons were present. A resolution was carried for delay and a reference to the constituencies. Only eight voted for immediate abolition.
