Auckland, August 26. The public meeting to consider the question of levying a penny rate for a public library passed a resolution adverse to such a rate. She had very rough weather after passing the Cape. Invercargill, August 26, A public meeting, convened by an unsigned advertisement, to consider the question of the abolition of the provinces, was held at the Theatre last night. There was a very large attendance. A motion was proposed by Mr Calder in a long speech—“ That this meeting highly approves of the Abolition of the Provinces and Local Government Bills, as now beiore the General Assembly.” It was seconded by Mr Goodsir. An amendment was proposed by Mr Lumsden—“ That this meeting considers that no change in the political constitution of the colony should be sanctioned by the General Assembly without the question being first submitted to a general election.” It was seconded by Mr Wood. After several speakers had addressed the meeting the amendment was put to the vote, seventy-one hands being held up for it, and seventy-nine against it. The motion was then put and declared to be carried by a large majority. The meeting broke up in disorder.
