Friendly Societies’ Act.— An adjourned meeting of delegates from the various Friendly Societies, was held jlast evening at the Foresters’ Hall. Present—Messrs Wilcox (A.0.F., Lj’ttelton) iu the chair, O’Connor (FI. A.8.C.8.), Clark, Ward, Berg, and Napier (Oddfellows), Schwartz and Heslop (German Society), McWilliams (Protestant Alliance), Hudson, Ablett, Crooks, and Ness (A OF., Christchurch), It was resolved that the name of Mr H. W. Wynn Williams (A 0.F.) be added to the list of delegates. After some remarks from the chairman on the objects sought to be attained by 'the several societies through their delegates, a discussion of a conversational nature took place, on the advantages that would accrue under the Amended Act, a feeling being expressed that, in the meantime, the societies would be protected under the promise of the Minister of Justice that a clause would be inserted in the present Criminal Act to meet any emergency that might arise until the Amended Friendly Societies Act, to be introduced by the Government, had become law. The following resolution was unanimously agreed to—“ That this meeting do adjourn until the draft is received of the amended Bill, to be introduced by the Government,’’ Mr Ness trusted that in the meantime this subject would be ventilated by the delegates in their different courts and lodges,-with the view of submitting suggestions. In reply to a member, the chairman said the delegates already appointed would be only too glad to see a delegate sent from each branch of a district lodge. The meeting then adjourned, due notice to be given of the date of next meeting.
