MAGISTRATES COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, August 27. (Before T. W. Maude, Esq., and Dr Black, Drunk and Disorderly.— Mary Ann Graham and Anne Davison were each fined ss. Larceny as a Bailee. —Eliza Jane Bray was charged with having pawned a quantity of wearing apparel which had been given her to wash. Detective Benjamin deposed to the arrest of the accused, who stated that two girls who had been with the prosecutrix (Mrs MacMahon) had given her authority to pawn the clothes; that she had pawned eleven pieces at Cohen’s pawn office and the remainder at Stewart’s. She said she told Cohen at the time that she was pawning the clothes for a young girl, and had made a similar statement at Stewart’s. Siegmund Cohen, pawn broker, produced a number of towels pawned by accused at his shop. Though she said that one parcel pawned by her belonged to somebody else, he could not say to which parcel she referred. The articles produced were only portion of those pawned by accused. To the Bench — “I believe the accused, when she brought the two parcels, said that one belonged to somebody else.” Henry Alexander, manager of Stewart’s pawnshop, produced a bundle of clothing pawned by the accused. She said they belonged to herself. Jane McMahon recognised the clothing produced as some she had given to the accused recently to wash. She was to return them afterwards. Paid the accused for washing them before them away. No one had any authority to pledge them; valued the clothes in Court at about £3. The accused had been before the Court five times, and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, with hard labour.
