MAGISTRATES COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, August 24. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.] Drunk and Disorderly. —Thomas Ellis and James Hamilton, charged with this offence, were each fined ss. Wife Desertion. — Valentine Shott appeared on remand to answer this charge. Dr Foster, who appeared for the complainant, said that under the arrangement of the Court he had drawn up a deed of separation on a basis that he (defendant) was to pay 10s per week into the Charitable Aid Home, towards the support of his wife and child, and that the deed had received the necessary signatures. When he (defendant) was asked for payment he said he had no money either to pay the 10s per week or the costs of the deed. He (Dr Foster) had since learnt that defendant was indebted to the Charitable Aid Department to the amount of £l6, and he would now ask the Bench to exercise its jurisdiction, unless defendant paid the first instalment of 10s, and £2 12s cost of deed. The defendant had money, so he (Dr Foster) learnt, and he had also friends who would assist him. In reply to the Bench, defen dant said he was out of work at present, but could pay £2 at once. His Worship agreed to accept this amount in the meantime, defendant to pay off the balance at the rate of 15s per week until the arrears are paid up, after which he is to pay 10a per week towards the support of his wife and child.
