MAGISTRATES COURTS.
CHISTCHURCH. Thursday, August 19. [Before G, L. Mellish, Esq., 11.M.] Ferocious Dog at Large. —Martha Brown was summoned for having a ferocious dog at large. Defendant did not appear. Dr Nedwill testified to the dog being dangerous to passers by. Mr Fereday gave similar evidence. Sergeant Wilson proved the ownership of the dog. Fined 10s. Breach of City Bye-Laws, —For allowing horses and cattle to wander, the following persons were fined :—J, Bentley ss; Christian Ditford 5s ; John Belgman 10s; John Dolan ss; Beria Robinson ss; Sam Dobinson ss; Robert Cresswell; Daniel McVeigh (8 pigs) ss; Pat Henley ss; Wm. Mullin (2 calves) ss; B. Gahagan ss; and Wm. Austie (2 horses) 6s. Chimney on Fire. —John Barrie for allowing the chimney of his house in Tuam street to catch on fire was fined 10s, No Light on Building Material.— Thos. Tilman for this offence was fined 10s. Wheeling Barßow on Footpath.—Wm. Gregory was fined 10s. Absent from Vehicles,— For this offence Wm. Kirkwood was fined 10s, and Albert Brown, a licensed cabman, was mulcted in the sum of 10s. Driving without Reins. —John Sycamore was fined 10s. Indecent Exposure.— James Johnson for this offence was fined 10s. Unregistered Dogs.— For having an unregistered dog Margaret Grant was fined 20s, and a case against Wm. Mansell was adjourned for a week to allow of defendant calling evidence. Breach of Public-house Ordinance. — Henry Lewis, landlord of the Devonshire Arms, appeared to answer to a charge of having on the Bth instant sold liquor during prohibited hours, and also to answer for having his licensed house open during prohibited hours. James Sheriff called, stated that on the Bth instant he was in the Devonshire Arms, and had half a pint of beer. Defendant asked that the case might be adjourned, in order that he might prove that the witness was never in his house at all on that day. James Sheriff, son of the first witness, stated that he saw his father come out of the Devonshire Arms on the day in question. His Worship said the case was very clear, and fined the defendant £5 on the two charges. Disobeying an Order of the Court.— J ames Reid was summoned for neglecting to obey an order of the Court, that he should pay 6s per week for the support of his illegitimate child. Ordered to pay arrears, £3 18s, forthwith. Summoned for not Supporting his Children. —Archibald Knowles, who appeared in Court in a state of intoxication, was committed to prison for 24 hours for contempt. Assault. —Joseph Dolphin Moore was summoned for assaulting Robert ARen. There was no appearance of either of the parties, and the case was dismissed.
