MAGISTRATES COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, August 17. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.)
Drunk and Disorderly. —Thos. Painter, charged with being drunk and disorderly at the Christchurch railway station, was lined 5s and cab hire.
Lunacy from Drink. —Flora Martin, who had been remanded for medical treatment, was brought up and discharged. Fighting. —Andrew Bums and William Howison were charged with fighting the previous night in high street. From the evidence of Constable Hastie it was shown that Howison had been the aggressor. He was fined 20s, and the charge against Burns was dismissed.
Assaulting his Wife. —Henry 0. Mandy was charged with assaulting his wife on the 14th August. Mrs Mandy stated that her husband had been drinking since the 6th August. He was in the habit since that date of coming home at all hours, singing improper songs, and using very violent language. On the 14th August he threatened to burst her bedroom door open with an axe, and assaulted her. She was afraid of her life, as her husband since he had been drinking w r as simply a lunatic. Through her husband’s treatment she had had nine years of misery, and she would desire the Court to protect her from him. Defendant was ordered to find two sureties in £2O each and himself in £4O to keep the peace for six months. His Worship also made an order of protection for Mrs Mandy’s earnings.
