CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, August 10. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.]

Drunk and Disorderly.— Ellen Boyle was cautioned and discharged and James Hyland fined ss.

Lunacy from Drink, —Flora Martin was remanded to Lyttelton until the 17th inst. Larceny. —Joseph Hannam was charged with stealing a side of mutton from Mr Geo. Bull, butcher, Cashel street. Constable Smith deposed to arresting the prisoner that morning on the above charge. George Doig, in the employ of Mr Bull, stated that shortly after opening the window of the shop about half-past six that morning, he went to the stables, and on returning in about five minutes saw the prisoner with a side of mutton in his arms. He asked him where he got it, and he said a man gave it to him. Told prisoner to put it down. He at first refused, but afterwards put it on the window board. There were four sides of mutton hanging in the shop when he , (witness) left, and only three wdien he returned. The side of mutton produced was the one stolen by prisoner. It was dark at the time. The prisoner said he did not steal the mutton, and had been asked by a man to hold it for a few moments. Sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labor.
